It's a regular school day, and you are exhausted from the long week. (It is Tuesday). You have some assignments that you could get started on that are due on Sunday. Next week you have an exam that you could start studying for in advance. You also, as someone with a leadership position, have to prepare for meetings that you also need to attend for your organization. Which do you start working on first? When I am faced with a stressful and overwhelming week, one tried and true and slightly horrible strategy is to start a new show on Netflix or Hulu and procrastinate the week away.
1. Seinfeld (available on Hulu)
Although this show ended its nine-season run in 1998, I recently fell in love with it while procrastinating studying for my finals last semester. Seinfeld is truly a show about nothing and everything. While some millennials may miss a reference or two, they will surely understand, connect, and empathize with George’s anxiety in most social situations, Jerry’s constant questioning of social norms, and Elaine’s never-ending spirit and spunk.
2. Friends (available on Netflix)
Friends is the kind of show in which you can pick an episode at random that you have seen a dozen times and still find yourself laughing at jokes a decade old. Friends is the old friend you can always rely on for a laugh or a smile no matter how long time passes in between viewings. I particularly recommend watching an episode from the first season and then the last season, and looking at how different the actors themselves look yet how the quality of the show does not decrease at all.
3. The Office (available on Netflix)
When you truly need a laugh, The Office is a show you can depend on, rain or shine. All you need to do is watch the beginning of an episode before the credits, and this show comes through. The romance of Pam & Jim tugs at your heartstrings, and reminds you that you too can find true love although the guy you’ve been talking to hasn’t replied to your text in weeks.
4. Parks & Rec (available on Netflix)
Parks & Rec is there when you need a little office family love as well as slights at the inefficiency of governments, at every level, but with its main focus on the municipal government of the small town of Pawnee, Indiana. Leslie Knopes is there when you need to remember that women can do anything, and they do it in heels. Leslie Knopes is the friend we all wish we were fortunate enough to have in our lives and is always available on your Netflix to remind you that you too are a beautiful starfish.
5. Brooklyn 99 (available on Hulu)
Brooklyn 99, which is still in syndication, is about a Brooklyn-based precinct that focuses on detectives and the hijinks that ensue. Fans of The Office and Parks & Rec will particularly enjoy this comedy. Jake Peralta, one of the most childish and accomplished detectives, is an important reminder that you can have fun while also taking care of your priorities.
