It's that time of year again (and no, I'm not talking about Christmas). The air grows colder. Leaves begin to change color. And of course, Christmas music blares through the air. November has only started – brace yourselves.
Nevertheless, this month brings us something greater, something that often passes by unacknowledged: Thanksgiving. It's a time when we gather together to celebrate gratitude, love and fellowship. But more importantly, it's a time when we remember why we are thankful for the blessings in our daily lives. There are many ways to show others that we appreciate their impacts in our lives. And truly, it's the thought that counts.
“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” – Thornton Wilder
1. Say it like you mean it.
Being explicit in our thanks leaves no question that we are expressing our gratitude. The two words "thank you" carry great power, and sometimes, we just need to take a direct approach in our appreciation. The language of gratitude is universal, so say it out loud! Knowing that someone appreciates you goes a long way.
2. Write a heartfelt note.
If there's anything more powerful than the spoken word, then it's the written word. Taking the time to write a letter to someone provides a physical and lasting reminder of friendship. What happened to the good ol' days where we communicated with each other via snail mail? Putting how you feel about someone into words is the ultimate act of appreciation that will surely be cherished.3. Bake something!
Food is our sustenance. Brownies, cookies, macaroons – these things compose the top of the food pyramid. Baking things for people is a sweet reminder of how much you care for them, and it is sure to brighten their day.4. Better yet, make something!
Arts and crafts make the world go round! Making little keepsakes is a touching way to reminisce the memories that have shaped who you are today. Scrapbooks and photographs will provide the perfect personalized gift. After all, you know what they say: a picture is worth a thousand words. Not to mention, a handmade present shows that you invested both time and thought.
5. Be an active listener.
Lend a listening ear to your friends. Talking to a friend is one thing but taking the time to understand their doubts, fears and hopes shows that you are a true friend who will place their needs in front of yours. Someone who takes the time to understand you and care about you is someone who is worth knowing.
