When Your Favorite TV Show Goes on Hiatus

One of the worst things about being a TV junkie is summer. And I love summer! Warm weather, more free time, what's not to like? Now let me ask you, what is the logic of taking some of the most popular TV shows off the air during the few months when the target demographic (let's say, 14-30-year-olds) are out of school and have fewer commitments? I'm sure there is some industry logic to it that I don't understand relating to how long the shows run, financing, et. cetera. But as a board 20-something sitting in the sweltering heat of central Illinois, I would love some new television content to sink my teeth into.

I know people will argue that there are, in fact, new shows put in the air during the summer. And this is true, I will not argue that fact. However, very few of these shows are what even the networks would consider their best shows. Most channels, if we're lucky, put out maybe 5-10 summer series per year. Sometimes we'll get them for one summer and then not again for 18 months! The shows serve their purposes of giving some (*any*) new content, but I miss my favorite shows.

I know that the stars and crews of these shows need time off. They have families. They deserve vacations. They, just like us average working people, need some time to unwind after work. I understand that, and I even get that most of their work days are much more arduous and longer working days than the average desk job. So while I understand the impracticality of what I want, I still wish that TV hiatus season was during the school year.

Why do TV shows come back in September? It's a time when kids and just gearing up to go back to school, fall sports and activities are starting, and homework beings to pile up. The parents of these kids now not only have to balance their own work, but also make sure the kids get to school and activities and get their homework done. Plus, you know, everyday activities like housework and eating and sleeping. I will never understand how people do it. If an adult does have a period of downtime in this busy schedule, I guess they could tune into a new episode if they have time. But in reality, *do* they have time?

I can only speak to my experience as a college student, but I don't know very many people my age who actively watch TV as it airs in this day and age. We watch Netflix, binge series, or maybe try to find the newest episodes of shows on the Internet. But we hardly ever sit down in front of a TV at a specific time on a specific night and watch a show. A lot of people don't even have television sets in their dorm rooms anymore (and certainly not a DVR), but rather just choose to watch whatever they can find through their personal computer. If this is truly representative of the youth demographic, why do networks choose to air their primary shows while we are watching shows like this rather than sitting at home in the summer doing nothing?

Some networks, the CW for instance, have come up with a new solution to the "no summer new content issue." They, approximately a week or so after the airing of a finale of their popular shows, make the newest season available on Netflix. Doing this, I don't have to worry about making sure I see every series on that network that I like, but rather (within a short amount of time from the seasons' conclusions) and watch each of the series on Netflix. This way, I have new content for shows I like at a time when I can watch them! Shows do eventually make it to Netflix from other networks, but it usually appears in August or September - a little sooner than the new season premiere but also right in the heart of back to school time.

There are probably so many aspects of TV scheduling and airing that I don't understand, and I don't claim to understand it. I am simply saying that I wish that more content was available while I am sitting at home with free time rather than being tempted to watch the newest episode while I should be studying. But until the day comes when shows come out when I *actually* have time to watch them, I guess I'll have to stick with watching when I should probably be doing something else. Or in other words, the real college studying experience.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
