I've been involved with community service ever since my freshman year of high school; five years later and I am still heavily involved with my new community in my college town. Giving back has been something that I've been passionate about for years and I know that my love for giving back will grow.
Money is a tight thing for most people, so they often can't donate to organizations. Injuries and disabilities limit people from physically being able to work with organizations. There will always be something, but to those who have the money and are able to do physical work - do it. These organizations need more than just your money; they need your time.
Many people are familiar with the typical non-profit organizations, like the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, or the YMCA, but I wanted to list out five that you may not be too familiar with.
1. 4Ocean
This organization is responsible for the boats you see on your feed. The boats pick up trash that floating in the water and 4Ocean has collected over 5 million pounds of trash from the oceans and coastlines. You can volunteer to be apart of one of their crews and hop on the boat and get to clearing out the oceans! Also, if you choose do both (donate and volunteer) make sure you buy a bracelet from their website; all proceeds go to funding their organization and the special boats!
2. Thirst Project
In the wake of Cameron Boyce's passing (rest in paradise, angel) I found out about his work with the Thirst Project. Cameron raised over $30,000 to fund wells to families and villages in need. He was their biggest help (and at such a young age, too) and since his untimely death, they've received help from his fans, thanks to Cameron. You can donate as little as $25 or as much as $12,000 to fund a well for an entire village. You can travel with teams to go build and install the wells yourself, whether you donate or not.
3. ChildVoice International
This is a new one for me; I found out about ChildVoice International while researching for the remaining non-profit organizations in this article and this one grabbed my attention. I've always felt empathy to those who don't have as much as I do, so when I read that CVI was founded to help restore balance to children of war, my heart broke. CVI was founded in Uganda in 2005, around the time more than 30,000 children were kidnapped from their homes and forced to become soldiers for the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army). You can go on a mission trip to Uganda to help build schools with CVI, but you can also donate as low as $23 or as high as $3000.
4. World Wildlife Fund
Everyone has heard about WWF (not the wrestling corporation) at least once in their lifetime. I first came across them when I was younger and their commercial played on the TV; it seemed like it played for years before I stopped seeing it appear. WWF goes into nature and helps endangered species and try to revitalize our ecosystem. Jared Leto raised more than $15,000 to help the WWF out! If you're an outdoorsy person, this is right up your alley! You can also still donate.
5. Amnesty International
This is another new organization that I found that is also tailored to prisoners of war and victims of injustice. Amnesty International was founded in the United Kingdom, but they've made such a large impact on the world that they are now a global organization. Through detailed research and campaigning, AI help fight abuses of human rights worldwide, change oppressive laws, and free people jailed for simply voicing their opinion. You can volunteer and donate.
