I recently flew to Maui to shoot the island. I primarily shot 35mm film, and this article will be the first of two parts that will supplement my previous article on my digital work on Maui.
I shot primarily Kodak Ektar 100 speed on this trip, and although my poor Leica M6 is off in Massachusetts (poor thing), I brought along my trusty Nikon F100.

I visited a botanical garden near Haiku about halfway up the mountain. The vivid colors and saturation of Ektar led to a really nice shot framed by foliage but anchored around this red flower.

This was off the coast at Baby Beach, and the framing of the red rock through the palm trees on the shore into the mountain was very pleasing.

This was at the same beach around sunset. For this shot, I waited until the sun was setting enough to color the clouds red across the way to rim their edges with light.

I stayed in a little town called Paia, and this was down the main street. At the corner is an incredible fish market.

This was on the road to Lahaina, where the bends in the roads can create really balanced frames to shoot against the natural landscape.

Once in Lahaina, we found a little outlook and I was intrigued by shooting the silhouette of the palm tree on the grass.

I liked the earth tones of this shot and the framing in the corner of the sand against the waves.

These last two shots are just really colorful landscapes that I enjoyed. I felt like they encompassed some of the beauty of the island.
