Shocking Celebrity Stories From Summer 2017

It seems the shocking stories never cease on Facebook. This week seems to be full of emotion all around on my Facebook feed. From celebrity death to celebrity uproar: here are a few of those stories that crossed my feed this past week.

One upsetting story, mostly for the Hispanic community, but I was shocked as well involved the leak of a trailer for a mini series. This mini series, Selena’s Secret, is based on the book written by reporter Maria Celeste Arraras. Fans of late singer were outraged by the graphic images displayed in the trailer of the Selena’s moments after being shot by fan, Yolanda. Theses same fans, angered by the graphic content of the show, also had petitioned back in January to stop the production of the show.

I personally feel that one documentary type film is enough. The film Selena upset the community once with its tale of the singer’s life. The graphic content is unnecessary. Fans will show their appreciation and honor the singer by continuing to listen to such songs as Biddi Biddi Bom Bom and Dreaming of You. I know I will. I feel it is heart breaking that Arraras feels the need to make more money off the death of the Queen of Tex-Mex.

Another shocking story to cross my feed involved one of the most popular Youtube artists, Austin Jones. Jones was arrested at O’Hare Monday under to child pornography charges. Tuesday he’s reported to have admitted to the charges. There is evidence that Jones asked two 14 year old girls to send explicit and revealing videos to him to prove how big of a fan they are. At this time, he is being held in custody and considered a flight risk until his trial. There has been now further information released at this time regarding the 24 year old’s plea.

This is the problem with celebrities today. After getting away with the twerking scandal in 2015, it seemed the court gave him a slap on the wrist after an apologetic video was posted on Youtube. It seemed that Jones believed himself above reproach. He now faces two 15 year sentences if convicted. If this is your music idol, I think you should find another.

Speaking of music idols, Gene Simmons of KISS has been reported by Hollywood Reporter, CNN and other news outlets filing a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office for the ‘devil’s horn’ sign. I know the man is a great entrepreneur, and I respect him for that. I even love the band KISS and respect the brand he created and trademarked for them. However, I think it’s absolutely ludicrous that he thinks the can patent a hand sign. That’s public domain. His hand gesture is the pointer and pinky finger extended and the thumb out. This is a common sign used by the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community to mean ‘I love you’. If this passes, I may have lost all respect for one half of the ownership that is KISS.

The final shocking story is not shocking because it send out strong emotions of anger and disappointment, but because of it’s sorrowful tone. On June 9th, Hollywood lost the beloved Adam West. Best known for his role as Batman in the ’60’s, West has also made several voice appearances for the newer generation. Most notably is his role as Mayor West on Family Guy. Many celebrities and fans alike mourned and honored his passing this week. Tweets and Facebook posts were send out in memory of the great actor. Thursday night the Bat Signal was shone over Los Angeles City Hall in honor of West and his legacy as Batman. RIP Adam West.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
