How We Can Work To Stop Child Slavery Today

Have you noticed a red X on everyone’s hand? Did you go up to them and ask them, or did you shake your head and walk away while thinking nothing of it? I urge you to ask them about the red X. You’ll get some weird words like, "End It" or "Human Trafficking" or "Slavery."

Slavery. What pops into your mind when you think of it? For me, I think of the slaves in the early 1700s on plantations. For many of my peers, they think the same. The view, for me, didn’t shift until I attended Passion 2016.

Passion is a movement. According to Passion's website, it’s calling students from campuses across the nation and around the world to live for what matters most. For us, what matters most is the name and renown of Jesus. We believe in this generation and are watching God use them to change the climate of faith around the globe. It was there where I learned about another movement, End It.

The End It Movement brings awareness, prevention, rescue, and restoration for those who are affected by slavery. It is composed of multiple organizations that help combat different things. For example: A21 prevents trafficking through awareness, education, and prosecution. It also restores survivors by providing protection and rehabilitation after they have been saved.

Love146 works to abolish child trafficking through prevention and aftercare while contributing to a growing abolition movement.

International Justice Mission protects the poor from violence by rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts. These are just a few companies that band together to help end slavery around the world.

In 2016, there was approximately 45.8 MILLION in slavery around the world. Now, this is just an approximation because we have no idea how many exactly out there enslaved. This number is not just women, men are affected just as much. Only about 55 percent are women and children, so that’s an amazing 20.61 MILLION men in slavery.

Houston, Texas is home of the Texans, Rockets, and one of the largest ring of Human Trafficking. Many turn a blind eye because they think that slavery is not in their backyard, but look around. Open your eyes. Millions upon millions are being sold daily. Nothing changes in a day, but it can change in a month. More changes come with more time.

I urge you to put a red X on your hand today, post it to social media and help shine a light on slavery. Help shine a light to those who are stuck in darkness. Educate your peers about this horror. Together, we can End It.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
