Say goodbye to catching up on Game of Thrones on your ex-boyfriend's cousins HBOGo account. On July 5th, the Federal Court of Appeals ruled that the sharing of passwords "without authorization" is now illegal.
The case was brought to court in none other than the tech capital of the world, where cyber security is all the more important. A past employee was accused of using the passwords of former co-workers to access company information.
What does that mean for all of us?
It's not a federal crime to give your best friend your Mom's Netflix password but don't try to use a total stranger's, unless you want to actually live in an episode of Orange is the New Black instead of watching it from the comfort of your couch. However, the CEO of Netflix said that in his opinion password sharing is a "positive" thing.
