While we still have a clear memory of how Google Glass, smart glasses worth $1,500 that allow users to surf the websites, to access navigation, and to take pictures, failed, a new wearable device has been introduced. September 23th, information about Snapchat’s newest wearable device, Spectacle, was leaked. The leaked information also includes that Snapchat is changing its name to Snap Inc. While none of us had expected this product, people inevitably have to connect Spectacle with Google Glass. While people are arguing if Spectacle will fall into the same path as Google Glass, I think Spectacle can actually bring hope to the wearable device industry.
Spectacle is designed as a pair of stylish sunglasses that is equipped with a 115 degree camera and an indication light. With a single charge, Spectacle will last a day, but the rechargeable case can give four more charges to the glasses. By tapping the edge of the glasses once, you can record ten seconds of footage; tapping twice, you can record 30 seconds of footage. The device can be connected to the smartphone through wifi or Bluetooth. You can open Snapchat on your smartphone, edit, and post the recorded footage.
People have been skeptical about such product. However, Spectacle may be able to bring new energy to the wearable device industry. One of the advantage for Spectacle is its creator. Snapchat was started as a successful social media platform. People are in love with the idea that you can send 10 seconds of funny or embarrassing footage to friends without worrying about seeing it again. Such idea and the comprehensive marketing strategy help Snapchat create an imaginary fan club, that cool and interesting people join. Adding a gadget to the social media platform will be comparatively easier for the public to accept.
In terms of privacy invasion, the indication light on the glasses is definitely the first step that Snapchat takes to protect personal privacy. The indication light will inform people that the user is recording footage. The light can trigger people’s reactive behavior if they don’t favor the user recording footage
Just like Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel said, “holding a phone to take pictures is like [having] a wall in front of your face.” Snapchat believes that using Spectacle will be a new way for people to share their daily lives. The very idea makes Spectacle different than other wearable devices in the market.
