Recently my college has been connected to reports of a physics professor making sexist comments and belittling students.
Besides his sexist comments he apparently would constantly bash students for getting incorrect answers and would display their wrong answers on the board while belittling them.
While this of course helps students see what they are doing wrong so they can improve upon it for next time, he took it upon himself to degrade the students whose papers he put up.
The specific issue that forced him to resign is one in which after calling on several female students he asked if they were "dropped on their heads" since they were unable to remember to do an assignment which lead him to saying women are useless. This then lead him to apologizing and following up with saying that it was a joke and that women are useful.
Useful for reproducing.
This of course did not sit well with the female students, one of which who called him out for the unnecessary comment.
After this story spread and parents complained he was asked to resign.
As a student that goes to this school, this is deeply troubling to me, as I am sure it is for many other of my fellow peers.
I am sure that he has gotten away with behavior like this in previous years and despite students efforts to get him fired, he stayed teaching there.
It seemingly appears that since this story blew up though, the school had to do at least something about it.
I love my school but I hope that we never let this kind of behavior and abuse of power happen again.
I myself have been in several classes where the professors felt they could say and do as they pleased simply because they 'had the power' and it disgusts me that we let this stuff go on.
This reflects poorly on the university, so I really hope there are no more issues like this in the future because students should never feel so uncomfortable going to class.
