Sexism Is NOT Dead, As Much As I Wish It Was

Many of you will argue with me that Sexism is not still alive and is not still a problem in our world, however, I am here to tell you that you are wrong. In fact, it is not just me here to tell you that you are wrong about this. I have asked others for their stories on this so that we can make a point and raise our voices about it.

For me, this is something that gets my blood boiling. Don't tell me that this is not happening because the fact of the matter is that it is happening and it is happening a lot more often than you think it is. The following are the stories that others have shared with me about these things happening to them.

The first story is one that I am sure many women have experienced. Think about it though if a woman goes into any auto parts place or any mechanics shop women are often talked to like they don't know what they are talking about and like they don't understand what is going on with their cars. Worse yet if a man comes in with us the people in the auto parts place or at the mechanic's shop they will only talk to that man that went with you. Just because we are girls doesn't mean that you can talk down to us or not talk to us at all. We need to know what is going on with our cars just as much as a man needs to know what is going on with his car.

The second story is one that really grinds my gears. A woman told me that in a previous place of employment the customers would say things like "with a body like that you have to be experienced." or "Being blonde and working here you have to be going up to the guest's rooms." Granted the person who told me this story would never have gone into a guests room. Things like this were only said to her because she was a girl and the people saying these things thought that it was okay just because of her gender. It does not matter if she is blonde and skinny or not no female should ever have to go through it.

This third one is actually a story a male shared with me. He works in the fast food industry and was taking an order but the woman that he was taking the order of wanted a woman to take her order because "all men are sexist pigs". Unfortunately, no woman was on shift at that point so he had to suck it up and bite his tongue to take her order. Not all men are sexist pigs ladies so unless that specific male gives you a reason to believe he is sexist do not just assume that he is.

This one is my story. Because I am a woman I often get told by men that I shouldn't be going to college and that I should already be married with children. I'm sorry but no. I don't want to be a homemaker I want to go to school so that I can do what I want in life. And no I will not get married to that guy that I dated my senior year of high school. At 21 I am not the same person that I was at 17 and 18 so no it would not have been in my best interest to get married to that guy. He and I have chosen vastly different paths in life and it would have ended badly. Also, I don't really want kids so for you to tell me that I should have kids already is outrageous. I will get married when I am ready and have found the right guy. I will continue to go to school and I will not be a homemaker. Just because I am a woman doesn't mean that I have to follow the gender roles that women in the 1950's followed.

Ladies and gentlemen sexism is very real and very alive. It might be more common for women then it is for men but both genders experience it. This needs to stop and it needs to stop years ago. I challenge all of you to think hard about what you think about the things that you think or say to people of the other gender. Ladies we don't have to follow the gender roles that women in the 1950's did. In fact, I don't think that we should because the world is not the same now as it was then.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
