When I was in the eighth grade or so, my "Harry Potter" obsession was at its peak. It was probably bordering on unhealthy. All my references were "Harry Potter," all my school essays had carefully concealed quotes and I was that girl in middle school, the one who everyone associated with the series without even thinking about it. I was fiercely protective of my favorite series.
Over the span of all these years, I lost track of all the presentations and conversations I’ve had centered around the trio, plot and characterizations. About 50 percent of everything that came out of my mouth was "Harry Potter" related. But my mom was, for some strange reason, sure that my 4 year obsession was coming to an end. “By next year you won’t even be that into it,” she once told me. OK, mom, sure.
Here we are five years later and my love for "Harry Potter" is still good and well. It’s the longest lasting interest I have. Harry’s been with me from the elementary school hallways I barely remember to Hunter’s rainbow bridge. Ironically enough, Harry has become immortal and here are seven reasons why.
1. The series strikes a chord with us in Trump’s America. Tyrannical leader with a campaign built on discrimination? Sounds familiar.
2. We grew up with the lessons that the series instilled in us. It includes lessons of loyalty, love and acceptance. These are the values that we try to live by.
3. The books and movies are still a constant comfort. There’s nothing like marathoning "Harry Potter" after a tough week or falling asleep with the last movie playing in the background for the hundredth time.
4. There’s always more to get out of the books. Re-reading them for the fiftieth time means discovering something new about them once again.
5. There’s suddenly more new material coming out, so midnight premiere and fan theories don’t have to be a thing of the past now that "Fantastic Beasts" has been released.
6. Everyone’s a fan. Going into any given situation, you can assume that every new person you meet is into "Harry Potter." If you’re correct, you’ve immediately gained a new friend. If they somehow don’t like "Harry Potter," their character is obviously dubious – tread carefully.
7. “Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.” - J.K. Rowling
