7 Reasons College Is Like A Carnival

It's all fun and games until you lose all your money.

Everyone loves the carnival. The rides, the junk food, the odd element of romance that comes when the person you loves win you an obnoxious stuffed bear.

Pop music, twinkly lights, games, rides, thrills. It’s everyone’s favorite place to spend a hot summer night. College is a lot of the same. It’s a little scandalous, a lot of fun, with pop music, junk food, games, and twinkly lights filling the air.

You start with the games and everything is going well, but then you start to lose your money so you decide to play it safe with the rides. Although the safety standards aren't up to par and the line is long, you decide to test your luck. After all, you can't really lose a roller coaster. But finally, when you start to get nauseous from the ups and downs, you head to what's always been there for you: the sweet, salty, greasy food!

While college is hard work and studying and carnivals seem like carefree fun, they’re actually more similar than you may think. Here are seven reasons why:

1. Carnival games are a lot like a dating pool in a frat house. You spend all your money to hit a stupid bell before you realize the whole system is rigged. You knew you were better off going for the corn dogs instead.

2. Your 8 a.m. classes are a lot like the dunk tank. When it’s you throwing the ball, you miss by a mile, but when it’s your professor, you’re constantly underwater--just like that Italian test you took last week left you.

3. Doing your makeup before going out on a Friday night and expecting to look like a million bucks, but then looking like you just visited a caricaturist instead.

4. You ironically pay for the weird guy to guess your weight, but after the Freshman Fifteen, you don’t even want to know anyway.

5. Your classes are kind of like the carousel. You can go as fast or as far as you want, but you’ll never get ahead.

6. Winning the fish with the ping pong ball is kind of like every freshman girl. You run out to buy one, only to have it die two days later, along with your GPA.

7. And finally, nights out in college are the most similar to a carnival. The whole time you think you’re having fun, but at the end of the night, you’re left broke, hiding from the guy who guessed your weight, and looking everywhere for your friends.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
