There's one thing that's particularly tough about college, which is that you're not allowed to have a pet in your dorm room, unless it is a fish. However, I never considered myself much of a "fish" person, mainly because fish don't typically do much...that is, it isn't going to wag its tail and bark excitedly when you walk into your house like a dog would. After all, who doesn't miss seeing their adorable pup while away at school? Nonetheless, I was inspired by two of my close friends who purchased their own fish over winter break to bring back to school with them rather impulsively (one of my friends actually calls hers a "break up fish," as she bought it after she broke up with her boyfriend of a year unexpectedly!!). Making an impulse decision of my own, I decided to get a Betta fish, too. I've now had my Betta for two months, and I'm so happy with my decision for innumerable reasons, but here are the top seven.
1. Getting a fish teaches you responsibility.
Yes, you do actually have to clean out the tank yourself without the help of your parents. Yes, that does mean that the longer you wait to do so, the worse it gets. And you have to do it all on your own, so don't procrastinate. Buckle up!
2. Actually, having to feed your fish is enough of a responsibility.
Going home for the weekend? Looks like you're going to have to bring your fish with you! Well, either that, or beg your roommate to feed him or her while you're away. PRO TIP: If you do have to transport your fish, which you will eventually, I highly recommend putting him or her in a large mason jar, as photographed, to make transport easier.
3. It's something to take care of.
Besides yourself, that is, and for a lot of college students, taking care of oneself is enough of a responsibility. But if you can handle it, give it a go!
4. Companionship.
I know. A Betta fish doesn't nearly compare to a dog. BUT, a Betta fish is better than no pet, for sure!
5. They're pretty to look at.
Superficial? Maybe. Still, if nothing more, a fish is something pretty to look at in your room, and Betta fish come in such a wide variety of colors, there's one for everyone.
6. But overall, Betta fish are pretty low-key.
They've become popular for being easy to take care of, so as a college student that has fifty thousand things on their plate, this one's for you. Nonetheless, always remember to not mix two Bettas, otherwise, you're in for a dilemma!
7. Be a little impulsive. Buy a Betta!
No, if you don't think you can take care of a living animal properly, then obviously don't get one of your own. But if you think you can and you're up for a pretty non-challenging "challenge," give it a go!
