Whenever I say sensory deprivation, everyone's eyes get huge and they think I'm crazy ! Now I know it sounds scary, but let me tell you why it was one of the most relaxing experiences of my life.
Sensory deprivation, is a technique where your senses (smell, sight, sound) are minimized. To experience this, you are floating inside of a tank where you are suspended in a solution of warm water and Epsom salt without any sound or light. For about two years now I have been both interested and nervous to experience this immersive relaxation technique. Just a few days ago I got to experience it and let me just say, I am in love.
Firstly, let me just say that I was suffering from back and neck pain for a few days prior to this surprise my boyfriend planned for us. As soon as, I realized where we were, I was like wow this is really happening. Upon arrival, our float host was so nice, making sure we understood the rules...ya know, no pooping or peeing in the tank or you're paying for a brand new tank ! Once we went over the defecating rules we went back to the the area where it all begins. We took a shower to rid our bodies and hair of any oils, afterwards we were ready to float.
Once you enter the pod and close the door to your personal float tank, your hour of relaxation begins. I couldn't seem to unwind for the first 10 minutes, but once I was able to let go of my tension the calmness that washed over me was so surreal. Float tank therapy is like a very intense meditation where you are truly able to be in the moment because there are no outside distractions. Although, I'm not sure what the moment would be because it is almost as if you are in a trance-like state. Completely released from your physical body, not a thought in your mind, just peace.
I snapped out of my meditation about five minutes before time was up. Remember how I said that I was experiencing back and neck ailments? After my float I felt no pain. This is one of the many great benefits of float tank therapy! As the brain relaxes into a theta state, endorphins are released into the bloodstream, reducing pain and fatigue. The increased endorphin levels also promote a general sense of well-being and happiness and therefore increase vitality and further reduce levels of stress and tension. In addition, I have been able to fall asleep so much easier.
Float tank therapy is something I recommend for everyone who is feeling the need to escape from reality, relax, and just overall want to feel better. I definitely will be heading back to Sacred Floats Tampa to immerse in this experience once again !
Don't worry there won't be any clowns ;)
