From the late 19th to 20th century many Native Americans were wary of being photographed for fear of disrespecting the spiritual world and the belief that once the picture was taken, so was your soul. Now fast forward to modern day society and one of the biggest trends of our generation is the "selfie." One of the largest leading trends in social media that even has these outlets containing features dedicated for the sole purpose of a "selfie."
While I am always a fan of self love and boosting confidence this process of capturing a moment has become a process built off of vanity. Instead of trying to share a beautiful moment many of us solely focus on how many likes and comments coincide with our photos and sadly begin to base our self value off of that. There are even instances in which individuals will post a picture and delete it only to then repost it moments later because the amount of "hearts" they were receiving were less than satisfactory.
Slowly our souls were really beginning to be taken, and with each phone shutter we lose a bit of ourselves in the process. Similar to Narcissus of Greek mythology, who died being consumed by the desire of his own reflection, we are clouded by vanity that blinds our own judgement. In a society that centers our views on beauty and money. Everything else of value is being drowned out and we are all victims and oppressors of this cynically unaware process. The selfie is manipulating self perception in extreme ways creating angles for the face to seem more appealing and filters for add ons. Sure it seems fun and harmless but when people would rather cover half their face and deem that beautiful instead, there is a problem.
