Self-driving cars have been hyped in the tech world for a while now. With companies like Audi, BMW, Tesla, Google and more jumping in on the action, there is a lot of funding in that sector of the economy. However, a few days ago, a woman pedestrian riding a bicycle was struck by a fully autonomous Uber SUV in Tempe, Arizona, and died as a result. This is sort of a reality check for the self-driving car industry. The car was a fully autonomous test, with no human in the vehicle at the time. Whether or not the incident was the fault of Uber/Tesla or the pedestrian, if a human was in the vehicle, there would have been a greater chance that the woman would have survived. This really goes to show how much self-driving cars need to improve in terms of recognizing certain situations, and picking up on surroundings, something that technology is currently lacking today. While I believe self-driving cars are not fit for current use today, they will most certainly be ready in the future, as technology improves, and artificial intelligence and machine learning is implemented into the industry, and both sectors lead to the improvement of the technology of self-driving cars.
