Self Care in College: Chicago Edition

Finals week are upon students who attend universities. In Chicago, whether you go to DePaul University, Loyola, Columbia College you have heard the common phrase of how the city is your campus. Although this phrase has been repeated and grilled into our minds, it is important to recognize how this slogan is true. Living in the third largest city in the world we have it made. When people think about self care, everyone seems to think about getting extra quality sleep, making face masks and yoga. However, that is considered as being basic and in Chicago there are so many ways to practice self care that other universities in rural areas do not have the chance to practice self care the way college students in Chicago do. Here are a few ways college students in Chicago can practice self care:

Alfred Caldwell Lilly Pond

This lily pond, found in the heart of Lincoln Park is just a short walk from DePaul University. This pond has numerous fountains of water that all enter into the large pond. You can hear the water trickle down the rocks and it is a perfect way to get connected with nature. This pond features trails that connect with each other and can be used for hiking. Usually going to school in the city is fast-paced, but this pond in Lincoln Park is an area where you can practice self care without having to worry about the fast-paced life of the city for a bit.

Chicago Lakefront Trail

This trail is an 18 mile paved path that goes all along the lakefront of Chicago. Runners, bikers, and walkers get to enjoy the scenery of the beautiful Chicago skyline all while next to the gorgeous Lake Michigan. If you are more active in terms of self care, consider hitting the trail for a quick jog or walk along this path. Enjoy the various neighborhoods and attractions that this trail passes. A great way to practice self care, and a chance to get immersed more with the city.

Art Institute of Chicago

If art is more of your scene, then consider this amazing museum. Located in the heart of Loop next to Millenium and Grant Park, stroll through the various art galleries that are on display. From Andy Warhol to the contemporary period, find a piece of art that you resonate the most to you and discover more pieces of art. Spend as much time as you want that will fulfill the self care that you need. With its great proximity to colleges located in the Loop, it is one to not miss and to enjoy.

Garfield Park Conservatory

When the weather in Chicago is a bit to cold and snowy, head on over to the Garfield Conservatory in East Garfield Park. With easy access right off of the Conservatory CTA green line station, it is something that everyone should visit, plus it is free for the public! In this conservatory, see the native plants and vegetation across the word in this indoor conservatory. If the winter blues hits you, see all the greenery offered in this conservatory all while destressing for your final exams.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
