[ self-care noun: the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health; the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress ]
Self-care in college can be difficult to maintain, especially with a schedule flooded with responsibilities, school work, and social events. While all of these things are important, your personal well-being and health should be a first priority. By taking care of yourself and taking the time and actions necessary to do that, you will feel revitalized physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Here are a few ways that you can practice self-care as a college student:
1. Get Moving
Whether it be writing a paper or experiencing a long day of classes, if you feel like you are sitting down a majority of the day, find a way to move your body. Maybe that entails going on a walk around campus, practicing yoga, or hitting the gym. Movement not only helps your muscles and organs, but it also improves your brain function and creative flow.
2. Learn to Say No
Saying no can be really hard, especially if you are one that experiences FOMO. While some people thrive on a busy schedule, our bodies eventually give in one way or another. If you are feeling overwhelmed and tired after a long week, it might be best to take a day for yourself and get some rest. There is nothing to feel guilty about when it comes to caring for your health and well-being.
3. Get Crafty
One of my ways to release positive and negative energy is through a creative outlet. College can be stressful, and it is important to take a break from the world of logical thinking to exercise imagination and creativity. Whether it be painting, drawing, knitting, playing an instrument, or baking, right-brain activities help promote relaxation and lower stress levels.
4. Look Good, Feel Good
Stress not only impacts our minds, but it also shows physically. Have a spa day and take a warm shower, use a face mask, or listen to your favorite music. Whenever I put makeup on and dress up a bit for class, I tend to be more productive and feel better about myself. Do it for you!
5. Practice Face-to-Face
In a world entangled in social media and screens, it is hard to be present and in the moment. Go get lunch or coffee with a friend or mentor and have meaningful conversations. Did you know that the average person spends 2-4 hours on their phone per day? Imagine how much you could see and accomplish with that time.Try to limit your screen time on your phone and be more observant of the people and environment around you.
I hope you can put some of these self-care tips into practice!
