Self-care has become a buzzword in today's society and for the most part, it is emphasized during particularly stressful stretches of time (like before finals week or in the middle of midterms season.) While it is especially important to take care of yourself when life becomes chaotic, self-care should be something that is practiced every single day in some form. This proposition can sound daunting and frankly unnecessary but self-care doesn't have to be an over the top endeavor. It can be as simple as taking the time to breathe.
Here are some simple and unique ways to give yourself the much-needed break you deserve:
1. Zentangling or coloring
Unleash the inner-artist in you by methodically doodling on a piece of paper for a few minutes. There are dozens of zentangle patterns online if you need the extra inspiration, but this is a great way to let your creativity flow and transform your stress into something visually beautiful.
2. Scroll through your Instagram feed for memes
Social media is great for a number of reasons, but one of my favorite pastimes is to look at memes or short vines that appear on my Instagram feed and explore page. Although I do not recommend doing this for hours, memes are perfect for getting a good laugh.
3. Call a friend
Talking to a friend or another loved one over the phone for a couple of minutes can instantly relieve stress and brighten up your spirit to tackle your day.
4. Go to a fitness class
Dance off your worries and get in a great workout at the same time!
5. Try to meditate
Meditation is definitely an acquired skill but once you get the hang of it, it can significantly improve your mental health and mood.
6. Go for a drive and listen to your favorite album
and while you're at it, scream it at the top of your lungs.
7. Make a list of your small victories of the week
The list can include things as simple as actually waking up for your 8 a.m. lecture or drinking enough water in one day (which is actually really difficult to do).
In the words of Audre Lorde, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
