Your room’s a mess and your parents are having guests over for dinner. What do you do? You switch to panic mode and start vacuuming every dust bunny you can find. For my sister, this has become somewhat of a routine. “I get it, Dad,” she would scoff. To save herself from pure embarrassment, she would start doing her laundry and hide her trash in the closet. I feel bad, because I never had to do such things. My room’s always been clean and well kept. That being said, I want to share with you some secrets of spring cleaning. As a Christian, I figured Easter is just a few weeks away and it seems best to prepare for it.
Spring cleaning does not happen overnight. Well, it can if you are really that motivated. It involves picking out things and throwing things out. Keep what you only need. Do not be a hoarder. I mean I do love books, but I have stacks that I want to donate. I feel like there are kids out there who need books, clothes, or shoes that do not fit me anymore. And if you do not feel like donating them due to sentimental reasons, keep them then in the attic or box them, especially those Twilight or Harry Potter books. I do not blame you. I have read the books and watched the movies, memorize every memorable quote by heart (and even dreamt I got sorted as Hufflepuff at Hogwarts). Nonetheless, spring cleaning takes time and a lot of energy, so I suggest doing it over the weekend or over the spring break like I did.
To make it fun, blast some music and dance to some Backstreet Boys or One Direction. Time does fly by fast when you are having fun. Mix in your own choreography and voila, a full dance workout. I have to admit, spring cleaning does burn out calories. One of my favorite things to do is karaoke. You can sing along and clean your room at the same time. Organize those files and CDs chronologically or alphabetically. Color coding helps, too! Just make sure you can easily find them.
Another facet to keep in mind is those photographs and albums. In this day and age, physical copies are worth more than digital ones. I love when I get to reminisce those days when I was just in preschool learning the alphabet and my teachers would just praise me for finally learning how to form words and speak. And there are those embarrassing photos you would never show anyone, but you share them anyway because you have a lot of confidence in you.
You may find goods or souvenirs that you have lost from your trips and travels when you spring clean. If it gets too stuffy or dusty, wear a mask to keep you from sneezing or coughing. Once you finish spring cleaning, you are well ready for the Easter season. Who knows maybe you will find that one Easter egg from your childhood.
