Spring is a magical time of year. The flowers are starting to bloom, the weather is starting to get warmer, and my motivation is draining faster than the runoff from the last snow of winter. Maybe it was midterms that stole all of our work ethic. Maybe it’s the nice weather that makes us wish we were at the beach instead of in our lecture. Maybe it’s because we’re still not completely recovered from spring break (#SB2k16!). Either way, we’re in what I like to call the Second Semester Slump.
It’s different than the mid-semester lull during first semester. After first semester is over, we get to go home for a month to celebrate the holidays with family, which is all well and good. But at the end of second semester, we have summer break. Three whole months of warm sun, days by the water, and partying with friends from home. No classes, exams, or lectures. It’s extremely easy to get excited for the scene that is going to be summer 2016, but dangerous to get too excited when you still have a month of classes and finals week to survive.
Here are a few tips I’ve found to help you get through the rest of this semester with your GPA still intact:
Reward Yourself
Finish a paper? Grab some friends and go to the nearest Waffle House. Pass a midterm? Eat half your weight in ice cream. If you’re making steps toward a successful spring semester, TREAT YO’ SELF.
Sleep
Don’t forget to catch some much needed shut eye. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all your work and activities, but being sleep-deprived only makes things worse. Take a nap or two and sleep while you can. It’ll keep you happier and healthier.
Enjoy the Spring
Like I said earlier, it’s really easy to want it to be summer a few months in advance, but don’t miss out on spring. Enjoy the nice weather. Go on a trip to the beach or the mountains, or just a trip outside of your dorm room to enjoy some rays before it gets too hot to be outside for extended periods of time without a dip in the pool.
So, with these three tools, you should be at least a little ready to take on the rest of the semester. I know it’s going to be hard, especially after March Madness is over and final exams start looming over us on the horizon. But take solace in the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of students also in this slump with you—and hey, summer is on the way.
