Another day, another shooting. Sandy Hook. Mandalay Bay. Orlando. Living in America makes one think guns are a school supply with how often we see another tragedy.
The 17 lives that were lost in Parkland, Florida could have easily been prevented with the simple passing of a ban on gun ownership. Young kids who accidentally shoot themselves or their family members would not be a concern. Shootings in cities like Chicago have the potential to disappear. I promise you the residents in these cities will not oppose a gun-free city. Effective gun control can save hundreds of lives.
Yet, those who are against control feel they are saving themselves when they can own a gun. Pro-gun activists always cite the second amendment.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
News flash: The Constitution is not flawless.
Slavery was once legal. Women once did not have the right to vote. There were protests. There were wars. The amendments the founding fathers wrote cannot and did not survive the test of time. They can be changed; they can be amended.
Do you think George Washington imagined semi-automatic guns?
The second amendment was intended for a person with a gunpowder rifle to defend the property from wild animals or to go hunting. Duels, where two people try to shoot the other first, are now illegal. It was dangerous so it was made against the law.
Similarly, guns present an overwhelming amount of danger. They are a threat to the safety of the public. One of the major philosophical ideas the Constitution was based upon is the idea of a "social contract." Social contract theory is the view that persons' moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon an agreement among the people to form the society where they live.
I believe that today, the social contract includes surrendering the right to bear arms in order to ensure the safety of the rest of society.
If you own a gun, what are you protecting yourself from? If no one else owns a gun, it greatly reduces the necessity of owning one to protect yourself. Without guns, we are not a defenseless society. When guns are legal, it creates the group of those who are defenseless against guns.
I have heard enough parents crying over their innocent children's limp bodies. I have heard enough screaming from survivors. I have yet to hear a story of a civilian someone expressing undying gratitude for a gun saving them in a situation.
I am tired of watching the death toll rise from an action we have the ability to stop. It is time to stop offering apologies. It is time to mend the bullet holes that tear our nation apart.
It is time to amend the second amendment.
