Ahh, another week has come and gone. Of course, this means another week of NFL football has also come and gone. The Seattle Seahawks are closing in on the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs, but they will need to defeat the Arizona Cardinals at home and hope that the Carolina Panthers defeat the Atlanta Falcons. They will sneak into the playoffs if they do so. However, there is something I must bring to the forefront. I must say that I am immensely proud of what this team is doing right now. No matter how many obstacles stand in their way, they continue to fight for their season, for each other and for themselves.
In the wake of the Seahawks’ humiliating 42-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, it seemed like all was lost. They needed to win out to have any chance at making the playoffs. That is when the team made a statement on the field. Their recent 21-12 win over the Dallas Cowboys showed a rejuvenated defense that knew every second counted. They limited Dallas’ superstar running back Ezekiel Elliott to 97 rushing yards while restricting big plays, and limited Dallas’ offense to 12 points without letting them score a single touchdown when they were in the red zone. They racked up three turnovers and the offense, which is still looking horrible, actually capitalized on them for the most part.
Russell Wilson threw an early touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham that was reminiscent of what the duo has done for most of the season, and wide receiver Doug Baldwin made a nasty juke on Cowboys' cornerback Chidobe Awuzie in the red zone to get open for a touchdown. However, Seattle’s offense looked abysmal for the most part.
The wide receivers could not consistently escape their defensive backs and get open, with a few exceptions such as Paul Richardson’s critical third down conversion late in the game when the Seahawks needed to kill some of the time remaining in the game. Quarterback Russell Wilson scrambled for a few nice first down runs and made a few solid throws on the few occasions when his receivers got open, but also made some awful decisions like running backward in an attempt to escape opposing defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, only to take a 22-yard sack. Wilson’s mobility usually gives his team an advantage, but it can also work against him if he is not careful.
The running game was awful once again, aside from a few plays like an astonishing 15-yard run by Thomas Rawls, who rarely sees the field nowadays. That play showed what can happen when the Seahawks offensive line actually pushes defenders to create holes for running backs to burst through.
Speaking of the offensive linemen, they were their usual inconsistent selves, but considering Seattle pulled out the win, I guess that they were good enough for the job they had to do.
Now it all comes down to the final game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals. Seattle has already beaten Arizona on the road 22-16, so hopefully they can defeat them again. This, combined with an Atlanta loss to Carolina, will launch the Seattle Seahawks into the playoffs again. Let Seahawks fans hope that they can pull it off.
