"Still at it, scrub J's with a toothbrush!"
Alright, so maybe this isn't another article about Drake. While anyone that knows me will tell you that I am a HUGE Drake fan, this isn't what this is about, however he does bring up an interesting thought to mind with this lyric from his hit song Worst Behavior (seriously, just do yourself a favor and get the album.) Although he clearly has enough money to buy any single (or many multiple) pairs of shoes he wants, he still takes care of the things he has earned, like he had to do way before he ever became famous. (Again, he is not the focal point, just a main example.) The point I am making is that the classic activity that many young people partake in to look good in public actually says a lot more about the person you are, your work ethic, and how much you value the materialistic things in your life.
You very OBVIOUSLY care about your appearance.
I think everyone cares (to varying degrees) how they look to people. I personally think there is something to be said about someone who actually takes the time to make themselves look wonderful before going out. It shoes that you hold yourself to a certain personal standard. Pair that with the activity of scrubbing your shoes with a good old cheap toothbrush, and that shows me you are able to put a little elbow grease in your appearance. Go you!
You value the materialistic things in your life.
I know that many people say that we shouldn't get hung up on the material items in our lives too much, and I would tend to agree but seriously, what ever was wrong with appreciating something you saved your allowance money on for months, tracked the release date for, studied the designs for, and fantasized about what that cute girl (or guy) would think when they saw the fresh new kicks on your feet? Not only that, but think about how much those shoes were and how long you had to wait for them! No, you're going to keep those looking as clean as possible, for as long as you can. Each dirt stain, grass stain, pavement scuff, etc. would be a painful reminder that you aren't taking care of the things you worked so hard for and sacrificed for. Do the right thing, dude!
You recognize that the best things you own are the things that you have earned, and therefore want them to last as long as possible.
Good lord you worked so hard and waited so long for these things, and now they are finally here. It is almost blissful! You also recognize that nobody bought these for you, nobody loaned you the money, etc. You realize that you worked your butt off for them, and now you have something that it truly YOUR'S, and you want to take care of them. Scrubbing your shoes and recognizing that you earned them shows that you are learning responsibility, as well as practicing true adult lessons that will serve you well later on in your life.
You are ready to run into anybody. And I mean ANYBODY.
Face it, life is about the moments we aren't necessarily expecting, and you never know when you are going to run into a famous celebrity, your favorite artist, sports athlete, or even that special person that changes your life forever. First impressions are everything, and therefore getting off on the right "foot" is everything, so why not make sure your feet look good in the process? Basically, by scrubbing your shoes, you are stating that you are accepting of the fact that the day may come when you stumble across someone that you may want to impress, so you are preparing for them to see the best you!
Whatever reason you had for keeping your shoes clean back in the day (or even now), it said a lot about the type of person you were then, as well as the type of person you may (or may not) become!
