I find myself thoughtlessly lost in the illumination of my laptop at 12 a.m. reviewing my syllabi, marking my calendar of future due dates, and already trying to catch up on readings. My pen glides over the smooth paper of a new assignment notebook only to be abruptly interrupted by crumbs that scatter the sheet…and the table and my lap and my ear?

How did I get crumbs in my ear? My hand knocks over an object to my left that flutters to the ground. I look down to see my empty Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bar wrapper resting delicately, but looking guilty. And now I have crumbs on my floor.

1. New Bar, New Me

Removing the bar from its companions in the neatly compacted quarters of the box, the fresh package glows with two hidden bars. It is the perfect combination of oats, honey, and heaven. In its unopened state, it is simply flawless and helplessly vows a delicious snack.

Like a new a bar in its package, it is now a new school year--a time where there is hope to start fresh with higher goals and aspirations. The expectations are high and tasteful.

2. The first Tear—It’s Happening

The split of the corner marks the syllabus week when, no matter how ready you may think you are, there is the sudden hit of awareness that school is happening. Yet, the first week is encompassed with ease and no crumbs. Everything is still cheerful and clean. A short and savory period.

3. First Bar, First Tears

Just like the crumbs that helplessly fall out of the wrapping all over your keyboard during your first bite are the tears of realization that school is much more difficult than you remember. Times of blissful summer joy had nullified the pain of the dark side of the academic year. But, it is still early. There is still hope.

4. Second Bar, Can’t Stop Now

The stacks have increased. You are surrounded by a mess of dirty laundry, crumbled paper, unchecked lists, and scattered rogue granola chunks. There's no turning back. The only option is to keep chewing.

5. Left Over Crumbs, Bittersweet Finals Week

Stress has reached its max capacity. You only have so much energy, motivation, and sleep to continue through a week of utter mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion. Like the crumbs at the bottom of the wrapper, you gather your strength and pour out whatever is left.

However, those last bits of oats at the end are the best part. After the struggles of the entire year--or Nature Valley granola bar--you reflect back and enjoy the taste of happiness that remained far above the pain. The endeavor was not easy, but it was certainly worth it.

As school progresses, remember to take a breath and enjoy the struggles. Because through it all, you are unknowingly making memories--ones that, in the end, you will look back on and smile. Those times are what will stand out. So grab a granola bar and a stack of napkins and get ready for a brand new school year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
