Former School Officer Faces Felony Charges

Daniel Peabody, once a school police officer, now faces felony charges for aggravated cruelty to animals and making false statements to a law enforcement officer. Under Mr. Peabody's care, two police dogs have died.

The first, Dale, was assigned to Peabody's care from 2007 to 2012. Dale had been retired from the force and was then handed off to Peabody where Dale could live the rest of his natural life. Unfortunately, his life was cut short. Shortly after Dale's time with Peabody, Peabody reported that Dale had choked on a toy and passed away. Mr. Peabody has just revealed that his original story was false. Peabody shot Dale after Peabody claims Dale was showing aggression. At the relatively young age of six, Dale had many years left in him to live.

Inka is the second dog that has died in Mr. Peabody's care. Peabody left Inka in the back of his police car, in the middle of summer in Georgia. Inka overheated and died. Interestingly, Peabody resigned the same day of Inka's death. The marshal's office found that Peabody's patrol car "was not properly equipped to transport a Police K9 having no agency approved kennel or heat alarm system."

Tyler Verlander, Peabody's wife, was also cited for operating an animal boarding business without a boarding license.

You have to wonder how people like Peabody are able to commit such heinous crimes against animals. Both dogs completely innocent. Dogs dealt the unfortunate cards of being put into the care of Peabody. Dale, a trained police dog who Peabody claims showed aggression. I find this sudden aggression to be a false statement. How could a dog that has been raised and trained to work alongside officers suddenly lash out? It doesn't make sense. Inka, a beautiful and loyal police dog died a torturous death. This dog was locked in a hot car by a negligent and, dare I say, evil man. If Peabody could do such horrific things to innocent animals what would he do to humans? Peabody deserves to be prosecuted and I'm sure any human with a heart would agree.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…
