Scheduling Survival Guide

Saving a few tears from falling over the start of a new semester.

Scheduling Survival Guide

In many ways scheduling your courses for next semester can seem like riding into battle with a complete lack of confidence and no armor whatsoever. If you are a control freak, like me, then it feels like you can't even tell which way is up and which way is down. As Spring semester scheduling roles around in a couple weeks, I am going to try my hardest to not feel so disparaged as I did last time. My plan is as follows.

Plan for every possibility.

Although I have the luxury of being in the first rounds of scheduling, there is always a chance I will not be able to get into that one class my whole schedule revolved around. This is why, I have alternatives. If I can't get into this course section, then I will have a plan B and maybe even a plan C. Hopefully this will save me some hardship down the road and a few of my hairs too.

Become one with the Degree Audit.

Over the past few days, my degree audit has probably become my most viewed webpage. I have double checked and triple checked to see what I have credit for and what is still remaining. Although at first a little cryptic, my degree audit has now become more familiar to me than the back of my hand.

Embrace the spread sheet madness.

My Excel spread sheet went from zero to sixty in the last month or so. Color coded, separated by semester, and everything in between, it has become a work of art. I would print it out and put it on my wall if I had a color printer.

Recognize the divinity of advisers.

Whether they are just a sounding board for well thought out plans or I have a billion questions, academic advisers may as well be angels from above. They have so many answers or knowledge of how to get to the answers.

Make time to relax.

After mapping out the entirety of my next 3 years, I spiral into a pit of doom at the daunting courses that lay ahead. Sometimes I just have to remind myself to take it all one step at a time and focus on the semester I am in.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
