"Scandal," Presidential Candidates, And The Portrayal of Donald Trump

It's election season.

With the presidential election on the horizon, ABC’s "Scandal"has decided to make one of their own. Fitz’s second term is almost up, and "Scandal" has been renewed for another season, so that means a new president will be inaugurated.

The back half of season five has focused heavily on the candidates. So far, still-kinda first lady Mellie Grant has thrown her hat into the Republican ring and her campaign is being run by her husband’s former mistress and great love (America’s too), Olivia Pope. Vice President Susan Ross has also entered the presidential race after some thorough convincing and an endorsement by President Fitzgerald Grant himself. If you don’t remember, Susan Ross only became VPOTUS because Mellie needed her out of the picture so she could become Senator of Virginia to set her POTUS plan in motion.

"Scandal’s" first Democratic candidate made his debut in episode 12 as the Mexican-American Governor of Pennsylvania, Francisco Vargas, whose current White House Chief of Staff, Cyrus Beene, secretly scouts out as the next POTUS. After a “heroic” scene in Pennsylvania’s Capitol that made America fall in love with him, Cyrus does Cyrus things and convinces “Frankie” to run for President (and for him to run his campaign.) Not only is he betraying Fitz, but he’s also betraying his party.

Olivia’s former flame Edison Davis also announced that he would be running as a Democratic candidate in "Scandal's" most recent episode. He says it’s time for “America’s first black president” (remember, in "Scandal" world, Barack Obama does not exist). However, Olivia thinks it’s time for “America’s first woman president.” The impending competition doesn’t end there. Olivia, with the help of Quinn, finds out that her father and Jake (#TeamJake), are laundering money from Jake’s “fiancée” to fund Edison’s campaign. Olivia didn’t want to play dirty with Edison but when Papa Pope gets involved, all bets are off.

A campaign cannot function without big money so Mellie and Susan both set their eyes on Hollis Doyle. Allow me to jog your memory, Hollis is the Republican billionaire oil tycoon who was the main funder of Fitz’s original presidential campaign and a main player in the rigging of Defiance way back in season 2. Well, he’s back and as pompous as ever. Mellie and Susan want him to help fund their campaigns but he can only choose one. Ultimately, he chooses Mellie’s campaign (and by that I mean he steals it, slogan and everything, and passes it off as his own.) Yes, Hollis Doyle is running for President and he is "Scandal’s" Donald Trump.

Pompousness and wealth aren’t the only things Doyle and Trump have in common. They both are businessmen, not politicians. They have very strong, negative views on immigration, they love to brag about how much money they have, they degrade women and they have the same hair color. Another interesting tidbit they have in common—their Presidential campaigns are not being taken seriously. When Fitz heard Hollis Doyle was running for President, he reacted in the same way most Americans did when Trump announced he was running for President.

“Hollis Doyle running for president, this ought to be fun. Hollis is a joke; no one will take him seriously. I assure you he's not gonna be a problem.”

This storyline sounds a bit familiar...Shonda Rhimes is a genius.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
