We Must Save Public Service Loan Forgiveness

45's budget will cut more than $200 billion in aid to students, gut income-based payment programs and gut PSLF

I didn't go into social work for the money. Anyone who understands what a social worker does knows that it's not a glamorous profession that pays a six figure salary. Most people who go into social work or another human services profession know their ROI (return of investment) is not going to be high.

As I inch closer to graduation that awaits me this summer, my nerves about paying the debt I owe for graduate school consisting of over $100,000 were put to ease when I remembered that I qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness , a program that will forgive the remaining balance on a graduate's direct service loans after they have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full time for the government, a non-profit agency or another qualifying organization serving under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Now, the PSLF program is at risk of being gutted, thanks to the administration from hell. According to CNBC, 45's (I refuse to say his name), budget would end the PSLF program, leaving me and countless other graduates in a world of financial worry and trouble if this program is gutted. This horrendous budget proposes more than $200 billion in cuts to students, according to americanprogress.org. In addition to the proposal to cut PSLF, the budget also proposes to cut over $1.4 billion in grant aid and student support to low-income students.

It's evident this administration out to destroy the middle class and working poor. It should come as no surprise that 45, Betsy DeVos and the remainder of heartless goons that make up this administration is out to make life hell for people who weren't born into wealth. Social workers, nurses, police officers, lawyers and other service professions are at risk of losing this much needed program.

People in these professions don't get paid enough. As a future social worker with a focus on school social work, I will not be paid much. I will likely be overworked, underpaid and underappreciated and I am counting on PSLF to free me of my insurmountable debt within a span of five-10 years as a result of pursuing my Master of Social Work. Even though I will never make a ton of money, that doesn't matter to me. Being a school social work intern just reiterates that I love what I do and it's my calling.

If PSLF is gutted, I will never pay back my loans. It's just not feasible. I wasn't born rich and I will never be rich. Without PSLF, I will forever be stuck with an amount of student loan debt that will keep me from contributing to the economy.

It's bad enough that the general population doesn't seem to understand what social workers do or the countless professional avenues someone with an MSW can pursue. My blood boils when I hear people assume that all social workers work for CPS (child protective services) and take away people's children; that is just one small fraction of the social work profession. Social workers work in schools, hospitals, non-profits, prisons, and can serve as supervisors in higher up administration programs. It is a highly misunderstood profession that already deals with high turnover and compassion fatigue. Scrapping the PSLF program will only make these issues worse.

We need social workers. Scrapping PSLF is a slap in the face to those of us who have a passion for helping people, especially those who are at an economic disadvantage, struggle with poverty or mental health problems. If we don't have an option that allows for our debt to be wiped out and we end up leaving the field due to compassion fatigue and low pay, then we are only going to see societal problems worsen as those who are in need of services will suffer because they aren't receiving them or the turnover rate will become even higher, which will put clients at risk of not being offered competent help.

By taking away such a valuable program that benefits thousands of people and helps improve the economy by taking away at least half of a person's student loan debt, the 45 administration is only running this country's well-being even further into the ground. 45 and his administration don't care about you, the United States or its citizens; they only care about making themselves more rich and will go to ruthless lengths to make sure they grow their bank accounts, even if that means putting people's lives and health at risk. 45 is a monster, plain and simple. A majority of the GOP are monsters; they are greedy, money-hungry, heartless monsters.

PSLF is at risk and we have to do everything we can to save it. The American Bar Association started a grassroots campaign called "Save #Loan4Giveness" spreading awareness of this issue and offers suggestions for forms of action that people can take. You can also call your representative; if you don't know who that is, visit the United States House of Representatives "Find Your Representative" page.

The most important action you can take to stop these cuts that will harm us all is getting out and voting this November. Vote out the politicians who are in favor of hurting college students, graduates, the middle class and the working poor. It's up to us to stop 45 and the GOP from putting the future of our country at risk for future hardship by gutting a service that is valuable and necessary.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
