11 Things You Can Do That Prove You Don't Have To Wear A Cape To Save The Earth

Everytime Earth Day comes around, it’s heartwarming to see people come together and show some love for our planet in need. People across the word dedicate their day doing things like picking up trash on the streets, educating one another about our earth, and participating in fundraisers for our ecosystems. While this effort is something to not go unnoticed, Earth Day does not need to be only one day.

Earth Day can be every day. Each day every person around the world should be cautious of the effects they are having on our planet, good and bad. Here are a few ways you might not have thought of that can save and conserve our planet, one day at a time.

1. Leave your car at home, and bike or walk

Not only will this save you money, it will reduce pollution and give you a reason to exercise. If your friends' house is within walking distance, and it's a beautiful day outside, do it. Instead of driving to class every day, you can walk or take your bike.

2. If you can, use a revolving door when entering buildings

By doing this, it will help maintain the buildings air temperature. Therefore, they will use less energy to keep the air warm or cool.

3. Turn off the sink when brushing your teeth

Why waste clean water and allow it to go straight down the sink? You can save gallons of water by turning the faucet off when brushing.

4. Reduce the number of napkins you use

I know this can be hard, especially when eating something messy. Try using only one napkin per meal.

5. Buy a refillable water bottle instead of plastic bottles

Save the earth and save money? Think about the amount of money you might spend on a case of water each week. If you buy a reusable water bottle, you won't have to ever again.

6. Have your receipt sent to you electronically

Cashiers are always asking if you want your receipt sent electronically or printed out. If you save your receipts like me, I have found electronically is actually a more effective way to track my receipts because I will never lose an email like I might with a receipt.

7. Plant more trees

If your garden is looking a little dull, and you have little time to take care of it, plant a tree! Trees are easy to take care of and will purify and fill our air with oxygen.

8. Buy local produce

Farmers markets are fun and delicious. By buying local, you are supporting your local farmers and reducing your carbon footprint. You won't contribute to the demand in energy and fuel for food shipments to your supermarket.

9. Start your own organic garden

A small garden can go a long way. Some things my family and I grow in our garden are tomatoes, onions, sugar snap peas, basil, and more. This small garden is very low maintenance and useful for many meals.

10. Open/close the blinds

In the winter, open your blinds so that your room can be heated naturally. This will reduce your heating bill, and save energy. Then in the summer, be sure to close your blinds so that you don't need as much air conditioning.

11. Use reusable grocery bags

Invest in a few reusable bags and keep them in your car for when you go grocery shopping. Think about the amount of plastic bags each person uses every time they go to the grocery store. Now think about how much plastic we would reduce if each of us used a reusable bag.

These simple things that we can do, can go such a long way. The most common thing that some people think is that they are insignificant and what they do won't change a thing. I believe that there are enough people in the world who think that what they do is significant and that they can make a change. If each of us has this mindset, then we can save the world, one reusable water bottle at a time.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
