12 Safety Tips To Remember on Spring Break

If you are a college student, you are probably counting down the days until spring break. Here are 12 spring break tips to keep you safe while you're having fun away from school.

1. Don't be stupid in the ocean.

If you are going to be swimming in the ocean be aware of tides and currents. Also let someone know when you are going into the water or go with others.

2. Protect your location on social media sites.

Sharing too much information on your location on social media may endanger your safety.

3. Consider travel insurance.

Obtain a good travel insurance policy that covers illness, injury and emergency evacuation coverage.

4. Create a code word.

Create a secret signal or code word to let your friends know when you are uncomfortable and need them to intervene. When you are with friends, arrive together and leave together. Establish a place to meet in advance if you get separated.

5. Practice safe drinking.

Never leave your drink unattended. If you lose sight of it, order a new one. Don't accept drinks from people you don't know or trust.

6. Tan safely.

To prepare for a beach destination, opt for spray tanning or self-tanning instead of a tanning bed. The risk of skin cancer is too great to spend time at a tanning salon.

7. Carry phone numbers and cash.

On spring break, carry emergency cash and the phone numbers of cab companies. Keep the address of the hotel or rental property that you are staying at in your wallet.

8. Use the buddy system

Going on a trip to a new place can be fun and exciting, but it is always a good idea to stay together in a group to prevent getting lost or ending up in a bad situation.

9. Do your research.

Prior to your trip, read up on where you're going and any destination-specific tips. Pre-arrange transportation from the airport, or research the safest and most reliable options for when you get there.

10. Stay alert.

When you're in an unfamiliar location, or out partying with hundreds of other spring breakers, it's crucial to be alert and aware of yourself, your friends and your surroundings. In general, stick to well-lit, well-populated areas, whether you're sunning, partying, or getting from point A to point B.

11. Stay healthy.

We're not talking about eating your vegetables. When you're on a fun trip with friends, it can be easy to forget about simple safety precautions like sun screen and hydration, but a nasty sunburn or sickness could ruin your whole trip.

12. Have fun!

With all the work you've put into planning your trip, make sure you enjoy yourself!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
