You may not have heard of Sabrina Carpenter - yet. She just finished her role on Disney Channel's "Girl Meets World," where she played Maya, Riley Matthews's confident and witty best friend. What many people don't know is that her talents go far beyond just acting. She began posting YouTube covers showing off her powerhouse vocals before she was cast in "Girl Meets World," and she's been following her passion for singing since. At only 18, she's already released two full-length albums with several singles.
After performing as an opening act on Ariana Grande's "Dangerous Woman Tour," Carpenter is now on her second headlining tour, "The De-Tour," which stopped at the Tabernacle in Atlanta on August 6. Her team converted the usual general admission pit into a seated area, and changed the simple venue stage to one that rivals arenas, with stairs and a huge LED screen.
British boy band New Hope Club opened the show with a few original songs and a cover of Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times." As just teenagers, they have already been signed to Hollywood Records and released an EP after gaining a huge following from their YouTube covers.
Alex Aiono, who also has a huge following on YouTube, followed New Hope Club with a swoon-worthy performance. He's known for his mashups of songs in both English and Spanish. His 2016 mashup of Drake's "One Dance" and Nicky Jam's "Hasta el Amanecer" reached almost 60 million views. He was signed to Interscope Records earlier this year and has released two singles so far, both of which he performed. His newest one, Question, had the crowd out of their seats and jumping like crazy.
Due to her fame from Disney Channel, Carpenter's fanbase is mostly teens and pre-teens - but don't underestimate their dedication. 200 lucky fans came to her sold-out VIP Soundcheck/Meet and Greet party, and each one had an undeniable look of joy on their face. Carpenter's dedication to music is just as strong, and it showed.
Carpenter opened with "Feels Like Loneliness" after a countdown on the LED screen to raise the hype. She walked down the stairs on the stage with the strongest stage presence I've ever seen from someone her age, and she continued that presence for the entire night. Throughout every song, her passion showed. The fans' excitement was just as consistent. There were times I feared for my life in my seat in the balcony because the amount of people jumping made it shake so hard.
Carpenter may be a pop star, but she's not your typical one who only sings fluffy lyrics. She wrote the majority of her newest album, EVOLution, which isn't full of the cheesy love songs on most teen albums - instead, she talks about real issues that people deal with every day. In "No Words," for example, Carpenter discusses the importance of being there for someone you care about. "When everything is up and down...and the world is tryin' to beat you down...we could keep it quiet, leave it on the tip of your tongue," she sings. Her fans especially connected to this song, even though she sang it towards the beginning. In "All We Have Is Love," Carpenter talks about how at the end of the day, love and happiness are what matter most. But not just love for your boyfriend or girlfriend - love for everything and everyone. She performed it halfway through the concert after an outfit change. During the song, the LED screen lit up with rainbow colors and it showed footage of friendships and relationships of all types. As a Disney Channel star, it's a risky move to discuss something controversial, especially through a song. But she boldly stuck up for what she believed in at this concert. Standing up for love shows a positive example to people everywhere.
Sabrina Carpenter can only grow more talented from here. At her Atlanta show, she showed lots of potential to be the next influential female pop star. Don't think that her music is for children just because she's on Disney Channel. If you have the chance to see her, do so as soon as you can. In the meantime, listen to EVOLution and be sure to check out her latest single, "Why," which will play on radio stations soon. If "Why" is a hint to what type of music is to come, you'll want to keep her on your radar.
