Not everyone is able to run three miles while simultaneously not wanting to pass out and rip your lungs out. And that is perfectly okay. Running is not for everyone. And because of this, there are alternative ways to stay in shape that don’t have to be as painful.

1. Walk

While walking is less extreme than running, it is still a highly effective workout. This scenic form of exercise can be done at the gym, around your neighborhood, in the park, on the beach; basically anywhere. Going for a walk with friends or just as a little getaway serves to benefit both the mind and body.

2. Spin

For most people, running negatively affects the joints near one’s knee(s). Instead, spin is able to target the waist area as well as abs. What is more motivational than having an instructor scream at you to keep pedaling as music is blasting while sweat profusely drips from your body? But, hey, it's better than running. Be warned: your butt will most definitely be sore. Small price for fantastic results.

3. Yoga / Pilates

These two forms of exercise may low-key seem easy; however, you are sadly mistaken. Both focus on the muscles: Yoga is for flexibility and Pilates is for strength. I honestly don’t know how some people can consistently attend these classes that leave me sore for days, but as long as your body is shedding weight all the power to you.

4. Weight training

Do not be intimidated. Weights do not have to be as scary as you think. Often times, people hear this and brush it off stating how they do not want huge muscles. Contrary to this belief, less weight and more repetitions are the keys to a nice, toned body.

5. Swimming

Laps in a pool are a great source of cardio if you aren’t into the typical workout. Swimming incorporates the whole body while pushing yourself forward to strengthen your muscles. Just a few laps can be an even more exhausting option than running, but in the end, it is all about which cardio exercise best fits you and your body.

6. Cross fit

Good luck. If you’re looking for a high-intensity workout Cross Fit is definitely for you. This type of exercise is a combination of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing, boxing and basically anything fitness related. The trainers are extremely encouraging to get you to where you want your body to be, and it is always nice to have a bit of support. Who wouldn't want to be (cross)fit and fabulous?!

7. Zumba

All you need is some good music and the confidence to laugh at your ridiculous inability to keep up, and there you go! 10 pounds thinner! But seriously, Zumba is a ton of fun and a great way to combine cardio with friends. Getting in shape isn’t easy, but who said it doesn’t have to be fun?

The easiest way to accomplish your personal goal is to make a plan and stick with it. When you commit to a workout plan, don’t back out. One way to ensure this is to have a workout buddy who will help you stay on track. The key to staying in shape is to not give up but to keep pushing forward.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
