We all know the feeling. Scrolling through Netflix and realizing, slowly, that there is nothing left to watch. Orange is the New Black won't be out for another year; your 5th round of The Office is getting a little boring; Black Mirror just doesn't have enough damn episodes. Here are a few tips to scavenge for some amazing shows and discover some new works of art.
1. Use genre codes
Genre codes were somewhat of a foreign concept to me, until my friend sent me an article about the list of hidden codes to enter into your Netflix URL to dispense specified genres. No more do you need to scroll through the vague 'Comedy' category, and instead, look through 'Spy Action and Adventure', 'Cult Comedies', or 'Dramas based on real life'. This was definitely a tip that exposed me to a whole range of new movies and tv programs that I wouldn't have otherwise found.
2. Netflix Original Series
This is a hit or miss. Some shows are amazing, and some just don't work. However, mini-series are an amazing thing that Netflix has. Shows like Alias Grace, The End of the F***ing World, and The OA are all amazing shows that I discovered while scrolling through Netflix's Original tab. Each one is so unique, and they all are so detail-oriented and precisely done that make for an all-around quality show.
3. Go back to the 'oldies but goodies'
There's nothing wrong with re-watching a movie. Some people don't like it, but sometimes when you forget the plot, it's like watching a movie all over again. Even watching older movies such as Can't Buy Me Love, 13 Going on 30, or Meet the Parents are classics that deserve a new look.
4. Use a Netflix Roulette
Not sure what to watch? Let a website pick for you. Yes, this actually exists. I even had to google it and see if it was true. It is. This website is essentially a movie generator. You can set the IMDB rating you want, either a movie or TV show, and the genre. I actually tested this out one night just to see if anything good came up, and I can honestly say it's a good last resort.
5. Using VPN
This came as another surprise to me, but apparently downloading VPN, a common app on iOS for better internet connection, can be used to watch Netflix shows that are streamed in other countries. For example, US and Canada have slight variations in what is available on Netflix, and so expanding the number of shows you can watch is a great way to discover some new programs that interest you. Downloading VPN on Google Chrome or Safari can let you stream Netflix libraries from so many different countries!
So, this sure was a creative way of looking at binge-watching TV shows. I may be crazy, but at least now the information is out there and ready for the audience's perusal!
