Perhaps most well known for his song "Drama" featuring Drake, rapper Roy Woods (stylized "Wood$") is back at it again and has finally blessed us with a full album. Titled "Waking at Dawn," Woods' new album, that dropped on June fourth, is definitely one to check out. For those who are unfamiliar with the rapper, let me give you some background information. Woods is a 20-year-old R&B/Hip-Hop artist from Toronto, Ontario with a passion for music. While he is new to the rap scene, he has quickly gained recognition for his single with Drake, and is signed by OVO Records. Almost a year ago (exactly a year on July 31), he released his six song EP, "Exis," which was an instant hit. However, it only had six songs. Six songs may not sound like an EP that's worth your while, but I would beg to differ. Songs like "Get You Good," "Unleashed," and "Innocence" will prove that Woods has what it takes to make it in the rap scene.
What some listeners tend to worry about when an artist goes from an EP to their first album is a sound change. Fear not, because Woods didn't change a bit! If you're a fan of Drake, you'll most definitely enjoy Roy Woods. Their sound and vibe are very different, but Woods tends to rap a lot about relationships and exposes his sensitive side, much like Drake does. Woods kept his original sound with the 10 song album, "Waking at Dawn," and even spiced it up with some Jamaican Patois in some of the tracks, like "Gwan Big Up Urself." Much like "Exis," this album gets pretty personal, mostly going in depth into Woods' love life; from "How I feel" to "She Knows About Me," the listener experiences the ups and downs of his relationship as the album progresses, ultimately ending with the artist leaving his girlfriend. It's also a bit of an emotional journey with his physical and mental health, as he mentions drug abuse and suicide quite a few times. He talks about his every day life striving to be the best that he can to be successful, but also showing his audience that he is just like every other regular human being. Plus, given that he is only 20, many of his tracks are fairly relatable. "Waking at Dawn" is raw, and I believe it gives a great depiction of who Roy Woods is as an artist, as well as a person.
I'll admit, I do have one negative remark: some of the songs may seem a little redundant, and he tends to repeat the same lines over and over again throughout a single song, but that's just his style and you'll grow to see past it.
Personal favorites from this album include, "Sonic Boom," "Gwan Big Up Urself," and "Got Me."
So whether you're pre-gaming for a night out with friends or just chilling before class, Roy Woods has a song for your mood. "Waking at Dawn" has only been out for a little more than a month, but it hasn't gotten nearly as much attention as it should. Give him a listen, you're sure to enjoy at least some of his music! And if you end up vibing with him, check him out on the Summer Sixteen tour with Drake and Future!
