We all know the well-loved 90s sit-com "Friends" and if you don't, well then you need to reevaluate your life. But for those of you who do live under a rock and do not remember the premise of the show, it took place in New York City, and followed six friends through ten years of their life. By the end of the last season, you felt connected to each and every one of them. You saw them fall in love and get their heartbroken. You watched as they grew as not only a character in the show, but as an actor. Let's be honest, for those of us who are obsessed with the show, we consider ourselves the "seventh friend."
One of the bigger storylines between all of the seasons are Ross and Rachel's relationship. From season one, there is this tension between them that is unbreakable. Even with all of Rachel's different relationships, or Ross's different marriages, they always had a connection. I mean, Ross did say Rachel's name at the alter. But the biggest argument in Friends history happened in season three, "The one where Ross and Rachel take a break."
This is what happened. It was their one-year anniversary and Ross wanted to surprise Rachel at work with a picnic. However, she was very busy and asked him to leave. When she finally got home from work, they got into an argument about how Ross is suffocating her and she may have accused him of calling her a park ranger. Well after a while, Rachel finally says, "I think we need a break... from us."
That night Ross decides to go out with some friends to a local club. He realizes his mistakes and calls Rachel to apologize. However, when he does, he hears another guy in the background. Although Mark (the other guy) and Rachel are just friends, Ross is a very jealous guy (we blame Carol), so this obviously upsets Ross. Well, after a long night, Ross wakes up beside another girl. Rachel calls and now wants to get back together with Ross, and thankfully, did not see the other girl when she stopped by his apartment in the morning. However, a little advice for any out there that is in this situation, always think of the trail, and tell your girl first. Because unfortunately for Ross, he wasn't quite quick enough. Yes, that's right. Rachel found out, and not from Ross. Obviously it did not end well for the two of them, and after a long night of arguing, Rachel accuses Ross of cheating on her and they ended their relationship officially.
This is the debate. Did Ross actually cheat? Ross says no because they were "on a break." But Rachel says they weren't officially broken up, it was more of "a breather," which means he cheated.
On one side, you could say Rachel is the one who wanted the break in the first place. She is the one who called Mark when she was upset. So maybe it was all her fault? I mean, for all we know, Ross really did think that they were broken up. Let's be honest, Ross is a good guy. He's a good father and even a good boyfriend (for the most part), so why would he cheat on the girl that he has loved since ninth grade?
But then you look at Rachel's side. Even if Ross did believe they were no longer together, he still slept with another girl, he barely knew, less than 24 hours after they "broke up." Which, if you are a good person at all, you know that isn't okay. It is also very obvious, during the first argument, Rachel never actually said "I want to break up." She says, "Maybe we need a break," and then Ross stormed out. Maybe if he had stayed in that moment and fought for Rachel, they would have never been in that sort of predicament.
Let's go back to the other argument for a minute. The following morning, after Ross sleeps with "the copy girl," Rachel calls and on the machine says, "I don't want to get back together on the phone, I'm coming over." This implies Rachel also thought that they were broken up. Which means, Ross did not cheat.
So the question still stands, "Were Ross and Rachel on a break?" I say they may have been on some type of break, whether it was an official breakup or not, that is still unclear. What is clear, though, is the fact that the same night they "broke-up" Ross did sleep with another woman, and that moment ruined his chance with Rachel Green.
***Spoiler Alert: In the final episode of the series, Ross and Rachel do actually get back together. However, since it is the last episode, it is unknown if their relationship lasts, or if this incident will come back to haunt them, again.
