Melissa McCarthy joined the ranks of guest stars portraying members of Donald Trump's administration on the episode of Saturday Night Live that aired February 4th. In the segment she portrayed Sean Spicer, Trump's press secretary. Spicer chewed a large wad of gum; attacked the press verbally, with a podium, and with a Super Soaker; and irately refused to address Trump's controversial decisions made in the very first weeks of his presidency. McCarthy is known for playing angry and aggressive women in comedies, and has for the first time played an angry and aggressive man comedically.
A Twitter user noted that Trump was displeased by a woman portraying a male member of his staff, and suggested that Rosie O'Donnell join SNL as Assistant to the President and Chief Strategist Steve Bannon on February 6th, to which O'Donnell responded"i am here to serve - alec has trump - melissa has spice - i would need a few days to prepare - so if called - i will be ready."
Donald Trump has already expressed great displeasure with Saturday Night Live, namely his portrayal by Alec Baldwin. He began playing Trump in the first episode of the current season 42 in October 2016. Trump began to tweet his displeasure regarding the portrayal on October 16th. He wrote,"Watched Saturday Night Live hit job on me.Time to retire the boring and unfunny show. Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. Media rigging election!" Despite this, he hosted Saturday Night Live once in 2004, and once in 2015 while he was running for president.
Rosie O'Donnell would be an interesting choice to portray a member of his administration because she and Donald Trump have had an ongoing feud since December 2006. It began when she was a co-host on The View. She criticized Trump's decision to not fire Miss USA Tara Connor for her drug use and underage drinking. She called him "not a self-made man" and a "snake-oil salesman on Little House On The Prairie." Trump responded in an interview with People Magazine by calling her a "woman out of control." In the following years, Trump called her a loser in tweets in 2011 and 2012, criticized her show, and her weight. She often replied to these tweets, citing his failures or telling him "go away."
Although Steve Bannon was briefly portrayed in the cold opening of this episode by Mikey Day dressed as the Grim Reaper, Rosie O'Donnell could still be considered for larger segments involving Bannon. Saturday Night Live most certainly will have a great deal of political material to work with in the near future, and might need to employ more guest actors not part of the cast like Baldwin and McCarthy to accommodate. Needless to say, they will have a memorable next few seasons.
