Once you've graduated high school, get an acceptance letter from your dream college, and begin the roommate selection process for your freshman year of college, there are a few things that matter and a few things that don't. I am here to tell you the things that do matter when choosing a roommate.

1. Consider their work schedule

When choosing a roommate, it is important to get a sense of the hours that they will be working, or if they even will be working while attending school.

My freshman roommate ended up working overnight shifts from 10p.m.-7a.m. This meant that all day long she would be sleeping. Don't ask me when she attended class, because I couldn't tell you. However, I can tell you that I avoided my dorm at all costs throughout the day because I didn't want to wake her up or upset her.

2. Consider their sleep schedule

You don't need a roommate that wakes up and goes to bed at the same time as you; however, you do want a roommate who has a similar schedule as you.

If you are a morning person like me, you don't want a roommate who sleeps in until noon every day for the simple fact that you can't open the blinds until the day is half over. If you go to bed early, you probably don't want a roommate who stays up all night, especially if they're loud and you're not a heavy sleeper.

3. Consider their habits

This includes showering, other personal hygiene, homework, eating, sleeping, etc.

If you are a neat person, it is important to have a roommate who is equally as neat as you. Trust me on this. You want roommates who take out their own garbage and change the toilet-paper roll. As demanding as it may sound, you may also want a roommate who showers on a regular basis. To me, personal hygiene is crucial to a healthy relationship.

4. Consider their sex life

Not everyone is sexually active in college and that's okay. However, if your roommate is, it is important to set boundaries and rules. These may include: when they are getting it on to warn you, them being quiet, and which places in your room is off limits to have sex. Trust me, this is also so important.

5. Consider their personal life

Often times when we get stressed out and upset, we as humans, don't talk about a lot of things. This is just because we don't like to talk about things that make us uncomfortable.

If you are anything like me, you like to bottle things up and sugar coat how you feel. This can be dangerous, especially if your roommate is doing something little that upsets you — it can set you off into a fit of rage and anger. This could cause you to say things or do things that you don't mean.

It is important that you find a roommate who is understanding and thinks intentionally and critically that you have other things going on besides school. When choosing your roommate, be sure to get a sense of their personal lives and how they handle stress.

Now that I've covered some important things to consider when choosing a roommate, here are some things that you SHOULD NOT consider.

6. Their music taste

Trust me. Nobody cares if you and your roommate listen to the same music; yes, even your roomie doesn't care. In the end, you want a roommate who respects you and your space, not someone who listens to Bon Iver on a regular basis.

7. Their sports preferences

Again, nobody cares if you're a hockey gal and if your roomie is a basketball gal. Believe it or not, you don't have to do everything together all the time and nobody cares if you put your sports interests in your bio when looking for a roommate.

8. Their favorite ice cream flavor

Really? Do I even have to explain this one? I cannot stress enough how many times I see in biographies people's favorite ice cream flavor or that they're a coffee drinker. In reality, as Peter Griffin would say, "Who the hell cares?"

Although it is nice to have things in common with your roommate, it is also okay to not have much in common other than sleep schedules, class schedules, and hygiene habits. When choosing your freshman year roommate, have a clear mind, be judgment-free, and be positive. After all, your vibe attracts your tribe.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
