My Roommate Was Completely Random And We Haven't Tried To Kill Each Other

Who would've thought this isn't a roommate horror story?

Moving out for the first time is nerve wrecking. There are a thousand things you worry about, but the biggest fear people have: Roommates. We’ve all heard those roommate horror stories so you can imagine how terrifying it can be when you’re off to a school where you don’t know anyone and are worried about being assigned a random roommate. Just a couple months ago that was me. I was absolutely anxious about who my potential roommate could be.

What if we don’t get along? What if we just argue about everything? What if she’s crazy?

When housing assignments came out, I learned that my original roommate decided to go with a different living arrangement and that I will be notified when a new girl gets assigned to our room.

Low and behold a day before classes started, my roommate moved in. Granted I was asleep and was barely awake when meeting her for the first time. We spent the next day getting to know each other and we instantly clicked.

I learned that she has also visited Egypt and that she has a playlist of Arabic music (even I don’t have a playlist of Arabic music). I learned that she was also nervous about who her roommate could be and told me her own roommate horror stories from her previous year. Needless to say, I knew we were going to get along.

Now that the fall quarter has wrapped up, I couldn’t imagine anyone else as my roommate. We always stay up on Sunday nights talking about anything and everything (even though we both have long days ahead of us on Mondays).

We’re there for each other when the other person is down. We never let each other look awful when leaving the apartment. We make sure the other always eats. We always check in when the other is out late. We’ve had countless laughs and inside jokes that always make each other crack a smile.

While we only went to high school 15 minutes away from each other, we both have our own cultures. My roommate is Russian and I have learned so much from her and we continue to learn from each other every day (and I'm also obsessed with her slight accent).

Now, I'm not saying we're exactly the same. We can be pretty opposite. I could sleep through anything and my roommate can wake up from hearing people talking down the street. But one thing is for sure, I couldn’t imagine going for late night Yogurtland runs with anyone else.

So while you might not know anyone at your new school and you’re going to have a random roommate, don’t fret. Who knows? Maybe they’ll be the exact friend you need.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
