Is there Room for More than One Female in Rap?

The biggest news in music as of lately is the fact that Cardi B is the first female rap artist since Lauryn Hill to get a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 for her song, "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)." While this may be a cause for celebration for the music industry as a whole, it is a threat to one person: Nicki Minaj.

Throughout her career, Nicki has made it a point to shut down other female artists. As the face of female rap for the past decade, she had a choice. She could invite other female rappers to join her in her success; which could potentially introduce possible competition. Or she could instead, choose to make enemies of every relevant woman in the genre. Nicki has typically chosen the latter. Rather than being an advocate for all females, Nicki only advocates for herself.

Her highly publicized feud with Terror Squad rapper Remy Ma began in 2007. Fortunately for Nicki, Remy was arrested in 2008 and sentenced to eight-years in prison, which put the feud to a halt. Since then, Nicki's star has risen and she was able to secure her spot as the number one female in rap. This was made easier by the nature of her music, which transitioned from a more traditional hip-hop sound to a more pop vibe. Her commercial success came as a result of catchy songs like "Super Bass" (2010) and "Starships" (2012).

On a recent episode of Complex's Everyday Struggle, host Joe Budden addressed comments Nicki made on Twitter regarding her feeling like she has been victimized by the business. "I didn't have sympathy for Nicki Minaj because now people are championing the new girl. You can't play both sides of the fence." He's referring to the way in which Nicki has put down female artists in the past. The show also touched on her desperate social media attempts to remind us of her success.

On the seventh anniversary of Kanye West's rap epic "Monster" (2010), Nicki took to Instagram to remind us of her famous verse. The song proved that she could hold her own against rap heavyweights Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Rick Ross. Not only could she hold her own, but she managed to have the best verse on the song. But that was seven years ago, and Nicki is yet to produce a verse of equal caliber.

Her career is losing steam, which isn't helped by the fact that she hasn't put out an album since The Pinkprint in 2014. However, it received a boost when Remy was released from jail earlier this year; she was finally able to respond to the disses Nicki fired at her while she was behind bars. As a response to the track "Dirty Money", she released "ShETHER" (2017). The track was inspired by Nas' 2001 diss towards Jay-Z, "Ether". The song functions not only as a response to Nicki's beef with Remy, but as a way of calling her out for her inability to work with other industry females (hence the wordplay on "she"). Resuming their beef was a good publicity move for both parties. Nicki shocked the world when she failed to respond to "ShETHER" quickly. Instead, she ignored the track and posted up front row at Paris Fashion week, another reminder that she's strayed from her roots. Remy and Fat Joe spoke about the issue on Wendy Williams' talk show. In honor of Minaj's "funeral", Remy wore all black for her talk show appearance.

Two weeks later, Nicki finally responded to the diss with the single "No Frauds" (2017). Despite the song's commercial success, the track doesn't bode well for her credibility as a rapper. Fans hoped that she would fire back quickly via social media, but instead, she waited to put out a heavily produced pop track. Not only did she wait much too long to release her response, but she was unable to produce something on her own. The track was boosted by Lil Wayne and Drake, the same men who helped launch her career.

Since the release of "No Frauds", Nicki has failed to put out another single and instead has relied on features to remain relevant. She shocked everyone when she responded to the criticism she's been getting for years. Last week, she hopped on Migos' track "Motorsport" with her rumored enemy, Cardi B. The press speculated that she only agreed to the feature because she was unaware of Cardi's involvement, but Nicki squashed those rumors and clarified that she did, in fact, know that she would be on the song with the "Bodak Yellow" rapper. To further remind us of her credibility as a rapper, she took to Twitter to thank the rap critics who texted her about her most recent verse.

Since the success of "Bodak Yellow" Cardi has managed to keep the media's eyes on her through her relationship with Migos frontman, Offset. While many fans are rooting for Cardi to take over as the next queen of rap, she still runs the risk of being a one-hit wonder. We'll have to see how her album performs before we can ask Nicki to step down from the throne.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
