Binge watching has never been something I was into and would rarely find anything that required me watching episode after episode. Ah, but how clueless was I? A decade ago, my younger brothers had me addicted to anime. I could not get enough of the Japanese animation and ended up watching one that I thoroughly enjoyed. After some research over the net, seeking similar anime, I found that this anime was adapted to live action. Thus, I was introduced to the world of dramas, more specifically, to the world of Korean dramas.
Now, being an obsessed-binge-watching-kdrama-fanatic is not enough unless it’s in the genre you love most—for me, that is romance. I could sit back and watch any fictional genre such as comedy, fantasy, thriller, melodrama, so on, but they all have to have the romantic component in it to make me feel whole. I know I’m not alone out there in the kdrama universe. Although more lists will be brought out in future articles about kdrama shows you must watch, this time around I will be giving up five of my most favorite romantic kdramas I couldn’t help but watch more than once (or twice).
Choice Number Five:
5. Cinderella and the Four Knights
After losing her mother in a tragic accident, Ha Won feels distant from her new family and after a series of fateful events winds up living in a mansion with four handsome men (dramafever).
My Take: I thought this story was so sweet and funny. The female protagonist Ha Won (Park So Dam) is hardworking, courageous, and filled with a sunny disposition. Certain devastating and harsh realities cause her to end up living at Sky House with four other men. However, they each, in turn, begin to care about this girl as she reveals her unwavering strength. However, she only has eyes for one.
Choice Number Four:
4. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
A freakishly strong, but totally sweet girl is caught between the love for her arrogant, yet gorgeous boss, and her handsome but disinterested childhood crush (dramafever).
My Take: Bong Soon (Park Bo Young) is freakishly strong and just as equally naïve. However, she falls into several different scenarios that put her courage and strength to the test and along for the ride is her charismatic boss Min Hyuk (Park Hyung Sik) and her handsome childhood friend Gook Du (Kim Ji Soo). I saw a growth in her that wasn't their before and a confidence to embrace that which at one point may have scared her.
Choice Number Three:
3. The Master’s Sun
A selfish CEO meets an insomniac with the ability to see ghosts in this dark romantic comedy by the famed screenwriting duo, the Hong Sisters (dramafever).
My Take: Gong Sil’s (Gong Hyo Jin) tactics trying to ease her frazzled life since gaining the ability to see ghosts, by using So Joong Won (Ji Sub) as her charm is flawless and hysterical. I enjoyed seeing the creepy scenes that made me jump and the scenes that made me swoon. This story had it all and each time I see it I'm left wanting more.
Choice Number Two:
2. Goblin the Lonely & Great God
A fabled "goblin" attempts to end his life by marrying a human priestess, but things get complicated when he starts to actually fall for her, and in turn, finds a new reason for wanting to stay alive (dramafever).
My Take: The storyline is incredibly well-written. I absolutely loved this love story and its characters. The power of love and magic and family make this my second choice for a reason. Once you watch this love story unfold, you’d binge on more episodes just to find out what would happen next.
Choice Number One:
1. Fated to Love You
In this Korean adaptation of the original, a case of mistaken identity one fateful, intimate night conceives a whole new love story for two complete strangers (dramafever).
My Take: This love story needs no introduction. After I pushed my way through the first fifteen minutes because of Lee Gun’s irritatingly loud laugh, I realized that it was indeed a part of his charm and boy did it grow on me. He got sexier and sexier to me as the episodes moved along. The drama was full of sweet moments and hilarious antics. My husband never watches dramas, but I got him to sit for this one and we both finished it in just a couple of days from how good it was.
The world of dramas can be irritatingly sweet or nauseatingly boring, but they overall have a way of sucking you into their folds. If you've never watched them before, and if you are a sucker for some romance, then I recommend you watch these. Also, with the exception of The Master's Sun, which has ghostly scenes, all of them are fit to watch with your young daughter. I know mine loves them and sits with me through each and every single episode.
