Rogue 9.5/10: The Hype Is Real

It may have been a week or two, but "Rogue One" deserves multiple viewings.

It seems like it's been forever since “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was released last Christmas, but yet again, the Disney giant megacorp has released another December Star Wars goodie in the form of the somber “Rogue One.” You’ve probably already watched the film, but if you haven’t, let me tell you how worth your time this latest entry (and first in the “Anthology” series) in the Star Wars Universe is.

As this is an original Star Wars production headed by the Disney machine, of course I was excited to see “Rogue One.” What wasn’t there to be excited about? The cast is full of the highest A-listers in the game, from Mads Mikkelsen’s tragic and masterful performance as Galen Erso, to Diego Luna’s dashing Captain Cassian Andor, there’s someone for everyone to cheer for on the Rebellion’s crew of misfits and hardened soldiers. Other than a few sticking points, the overall structure that Director Gareth Edwards has prepared for us is solid - we start at the beginning (no flashback ever feels hamfisted or overly expositional), and we slam to a pulse-pounding conclusion that drops us off right on the steps of “A New Hope.” If you haven’t seen “Rogue One,” you should do so for the ending alone. The payoff is so satisfying that it’s difficult to remember any previous quibbles you may have had (including one cameo moment that had a poor, cheesy dialogue moment that feels more like wink-and-nod writing than character development).

The breakout characters are Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe, who will forever be immortalized as the “Jedi who is not a Jedi” in my mind, and the lovable Imperial Droid K2-SO, whose constant one-liners lighten the mood of an otherwise gritty war movie. Notable performances to Forrest Whitaker as Saw Guerrera’s madman rebel and who-the-hell-ever did the body work for Darth Vader (doesn’t seem like David Prowse as usual), as well as Genevieie O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma. It was good to see her out of the deleted scenes of “Revenge of the Sith.”

Simply put, the dream is real. Go see Rebellion triumph.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
