There comes a time every summer where the excitement of the season slowly fizzles out and boredom sets in. How many times can you go to the same beach or visit the same places in the city without getting tired of it? The High Line and Jones Beach are only interesting the first couple of times before you find yourself craving something more.
So how can you beat summer boredom this year without breaking the bank (because debt is totally not the move for 2018)? Gather all of your friends with no plans and try scheduling a road trip somewhere nearby!
The more people the better, since this helps reduce the cost for each person. If you live on the East Coast, Virginia Beach is beautiful around July-August and shouldn't be too expensive if you plan ahead and book a hotel off the boardwalk instead.
Traveling doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. There are always cheaper alternatives for everything. Can't afford a hotel room for all your buddies? AirBnB allows you to stay in a host family's room at an affordable rate for as long as you need (and it's completely safe, promise!) Do your research and check if the area you're traveling to has a hostel—in that case, you can save a large chunk of your money for attractions and food.
Don't live anywhere close to cute little beach towns? No problem! It's the journey, not the destination that counts. Be adventurous and take detours into random exits on the road. Visit local attractions, even in areas you'd rather drive by. Seeing the little wonders of neighboring towns adds some whimsy to your trip and it's definitely something you'll remember forever.
Summers never last as long as you would expect them to. One second you're at your summer job, bored out of your mind, and the next you're packing up everything in your room to head back to campus. Don't let summer '18 slip through your fingers. Make memories you'll cherish with your friends forever—or at least until next summer.
