2017 brought in lots of changes in the world from the entertainment scandals to technological advances to our very own government. This year will go down in history as a monumental year for many because of a few highlights and downfalls.

Worst – the Las Vegas Shooting
October 10th - Recognized as the deadliest shooting in American history, a lone gunman opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada killed 58 people and wounded 546.
Best – First Barbie Doll to wear a hijab
Huge strides for Muslims were made this year when the first Barbie Doll to wear a hijab was unveiled on November 13th. Modeled after Olympic Fencer, Ibitihaj Muhammad, the Barbie features a full fencing outfit as well.
Worst – Donald Trump inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States of America
Entrepreneur and reality TV star Donald Trump gets inaugurated as president on January 20th. He is the first president to have sexual assault allegations and to have no military or political experience before taking office.
Best – Oldest human ancestor is discovered
The previously extinct, 540-million-year old microscopic marine creature known as the saccorhytus was discovered by scientists in China. It is the oldest human ancestor of humans ever discovered.
Worst - Hurricane Irma strikes
Hurricane Irma destroyed much of the Caribbean Islands including Barbuda, Saint Martins, and the British Virgin Islands. Referred to as the strongest hurricanes of all time, Hurricane Irma put left several Caribbean Islands underwater and destroyed.
Best – NASA Spacecraft comes closest to Jupiter’s Great Red Spot
NASA’s Juno Spacecraft became the first spacecraft to get 9,000 kilometers over Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a storm surrounding the planet. Images taken on the space excursion are the closest images ever taken before off the mass.
Worst – Sexual Assault allegations run through through Hollywood
Various sexual assault accusers of producers, executives, actors, comedians, and directors from Hollywood powerhouses have come forward to publically share their stories. Producer Harvey Weinstein was the first to be accused, with 34 men right after. TV host Charlie Rose, comedian Louis C.K., producer Brett Ratner and actor Kevin Spacey are few on the list of the accused.
Best – Germany, Australia, Malta, and Austria vote to legalize same-sex marriage
Big steps for the LGBTQ community have been made in Germany, Austria, Malta and Australia in 2017. These countries voted to legalize same-sex marriage. This decision is particularly huge for Germany and Austria, two formerly communist countries.
