President Trump's administration is crumbling. He has people resigning and people being fired left and right. But one person he hasn't fired is Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Unlike Steve Bannon (of Breitbart fame) and Mike Pence (in favor of gay conversion therapy), Rex Tillerson is a cabinet member who actually has more moderate views. When Trump makes wild statements and absurd predictions, Tillerson is the realist who tells the truth to the audience.
For example, when Trump told America that we will definitely win the war against Afghanistan, Tillerson said that's not so obvious a conclusion to the war as Trump says it is. Tillerson said that he disagrees with Trump on a lot of things but he hasn't resigned. And Trump hasn't fired him, but with Tillerson and Trump contradicting each other, it's probably a matter of time.
When Tillerson was asked if the president's reaction to Charlottesville reflects American values, he replied: "The president speaks for himself." When he was asked if he was separating himself from Trump, Tillerson responded, "I've made my own comment as to our values." Some might wonder why Tillerson is staying on board while he clearly has strong issues with the president's opinions and they have different values.
In a normal administration, the secretary of state would probably be fired for implying that the president's values don't reflect America's values. After all, the president is supposed to be not just the leader of America but also the face of it. But this is anything but a normal administration.
While everyone from the Director of Communications to the Chief of Staff is fired, let's see how long the level-headed Rex Tillerson will last. As a former CEO of Exxon, a company with lawsuits, fraud accusations, and serious environmental destruction, Tillerson has got plenty of his own baggage. But he's also the closest thing we have to a normal person in the White House at the moment. So hopefully he stays on as long as Trump does.
