Retail Workers Are Human, Too

I promise we are just as tired as you are.

I started a new job at American Eagle Outfitters about two weeks ago. It's a seasonal position, so I knew why I was hired.

But I am dreading black Friday more than I was before being hired.

I get it, the deals are great, and you're getting a few steps ahead on Christmas shopping. I've gone shopping on Black Friday the past few years myself.

I will never be one to push through crowds, fight people, and especially be rude to employees.

Now that I am one of those employees, I have four words for everyone planning to be out on Black Friday: we're doing our best.

It is my first Black Friday working a retail job, so I'm still learning the ropes.

I was in training the past couple weeks, and unfortunately, the first thing I was told is "people are so rude, but take things with a grain of salt." I was told that people are rude before I was even told how to use the register.

This is not okay.

I understand you're tired, and probably just want to go home. But let's get one thing straight. No one has forced you to come out and shop at 6:00 AM.

I promise we are just as tired as you are. Please understand that there you are one of the hundreds of other people in the store, and think twice before you lose your temper on an employee.

We really are doing our best to get you checked out as swiftly as possible. Computers act up, and mistakes happen. We're human too.

When you are out shopping this year, please consider the fact that some things are completely out of our control. If we are out of your size, or the line is too long, please do not take things like this out on an employee. Chances are the employee that is ringing your items up has not set foot on the sales floor in hours.

Working a retail job during the holiday season was a choice that I made, and I do not regret it.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
