By now, everybody has heard about the death of American rapper Juice WRLD. The 21-year-old died of a painkiller overdose, which led him to seize and go into cardiac arrest at Chicago Midway Airport shortly after his plane landed on Sunday morning. While on the plane, he allegedly had codeine along with 70 pounds of marijuanna in his possession. The situation was obviously quite messy, and brings a lot of questions to rise. Why did he overdose? Why didn't anybody stop him? Was it suicide? Was he forced into the situation?
I am a huge music fan, and I do not limit myself to specific genres. We have Juice WRLD to thank for a variety of wonderful songs. His voice was truly unique, and his lyrics were powerful and heartfelt. His death has truly hurt my heart, and the hearts of millions around the world.
Juice WRLD's death is just another added to the list of amazing, talented music artists that have passed on within the past few years due to the complications of drug abuse. Rapper Lil Peep was only 21 when he died a couple of years ago of an accidental drug overdose. Rapper Mac Miller died at the age of 26 just last fall of an accidental drug overdose. Too many talented, young lives taken by drugs. The bottom line is, and perhaps the saddest part of it all, is that it isn't surprising.
Drug overdoses contributing to the deaths of celebrities is nothing new in our society. Tom Petty, Prince, Michael Jackson, Cory Monteith, Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger, Elvis Presley...all huge names that have died of accidental drug overdose. These kinds of deaths leave behind so many unanswered questions, but also produce a pattern, a pattern that I hope one day can be stopped. I am aware that I could not possibly know everything about the emotional and physical demands of what it takes to maintain a life in the spotlight, but I do know that all too many of the people living in the spotlight have died too young, and for no good reason. This must be stopped.
Juice WRLD's legacy, along with the legacy of other rappers who have died for similar reasons, will continue to live on. However, we must do our best to stop the stigma around drug abuse. We must stop idolizing it and we must make the choice to idolize health instead. Promote healthy living. Discourage drug use. Encourage your friends to do the same. If you have a loved one dealing with a drug issue, do all you can to help them. Do all you can to help them stop, before it is too late. Juice WRLD needed somebody. Mac Miller needed somebody. We've seen way too many times what can happen when it has become too late.
