A Response to the Twitter Profile Titled, "End St. Patrick's Day"

"You think you're different because you're Irish, so you're racist."

I know that this article will be posted after St. Patrick's day, but I am currently writing this on St. Patrick's Day and for good reason. Yes, I am Irish and I am wearing green with pride. I honestly wasn't sure what to write about this week until it was brought to my attention that someone created a Twitter page called "End St. Patrick's Day." I couldn't understand why, so I decided to look it up myself. As soon as you click on the page, you see the words:

"The official Twitter account for the coordinated effort to end St. Patrick's Day and raise awareness of the fact that it is a holiday based on white pride."

I immediately thought, "this has to be a joke..." but as I continued to scroll through it was said by the creator of this page that it is not a joke at all. My next reaction was...so it's perfectly okay for us to have Black History Month but not St. Patrick's Day? If you are going to call it a "holiday based on white pride" then what's the difference? So black pride is okay but white pride isn't? There is no difference anyone can point out that does not show racism.

Then I read the very first tweet on the page which said, "you think you're different because you're Irish, so you're racist." Excuse me? I am Irish, I am not racist, and all I am doing is trying to celebrate a part of my culture. That's what this is supposed to be about! It's not about promoting a "white holiday" as the creator of this page had also called it, it honestly has absolutely nothing to do with race. It is about being proud of your cultural heritage.

I have no problem with people from other cultures and I think everyone should have the freedom to learn about and celebrate their traditions and where their family came from. All this Twitter page is doing is putting down people for not being exactly the same. Yes, I understand equal rights and fully support everyone wanting to be treated equally, but no matter what we will always be different and diverse. That is the beauty of this world. If everyone were the same, this world would be a boring place. So, why is it a bad thing for us to celebrate our separate cultures? It's not. I will not feel bad for celebrating St. Patrick's Day because I am Irish just as blacks should not feel bad about celebrating Black History Month because that is a part of who they are. Be proud of who you are, don't let others put you down just because you are not exactly like them.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
