There is not a Song for you
No Harmony or melody
Pealing forth a tune
There are no words for you
Leaflets of lyrics, returned
Dust to dust, earth to earth
All that you left is a broken heart,
A broken pen, ink and tears
Mottled pages, the breath of years
Now I don’t know where to start
In the fullness of time,
My heart will heal
And once again my songs,
My words, will peal
The world shall hear
My love for you.
This poem came to me after hearing Edna St. Vincent Millay’s Lyrics “For You there is No Song.” This is a requiem, and can be understood as the grief after a loved one, or the recovery after a failed romance.
